A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,FLORIDA,APPROVING A GRANT IN THE
AMOUNT OF $50,000 TO THE CENTER FOR COMBATING
ANTISEMITISM (CENTER)TO ENABLE THE CENTER TO PROVIDE
ANTISEMITISM SENSITIVITY TRAINING SESSIONS AND MAKE ITS
ONLINE TRAINING PROGRAM "ANTISEMITISM IS BAD MEDICINE"
AVAILABLE TO UP TO 5,000 MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTER
EMPLOYEES FOR A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR,HAVING DETERMINED
THAT TRAINING HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS AND STAFF AT
THE CITY'S LARGEST HOSPITAL SERVES AN IMPORTANT PUBLIC
PURPOSE,AND DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO IDENTIFY
AND ALLOCATE FUNDING FOR THIS GRANT IN FY 2025;AND
FURTHER,DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO NEGOTIATE,AND
THE CITY MANAGER AND CITY CLERK TO EXECUTE,A GRANT
AGREEMENT FOR THE FOREGOING PURPOSE WITH THE CENTER IN
THE CITY'S STANDARD FORM OF GRANT AGREEMENT.
WHEREAS,the City of Miami Beach is home to a diverse and vibrant community,
including a significant number of residents of Jewish heritage;and
WHEREAS,antisemitism continues to be a growing and dangerous threat
worldwide,including in the field of medicine;and
WHEREAS,antisemitism undermines medical ethics,creates hostile work
environments,and negatively impacts patient care,which can have detrimental effects
on both patients and healthcare providers;and
WHEREAS,studies have shown that over 65 percent of religiously motivated hate
crimes in the United States are directed at Jewish individuals,with antisemitism also
present in healthcare environments;and
WHEREAS,the City recognizes the importance of combating antisemitism in
healthcare settings,where it can compromise the quality of care;and
WHEREAS,the Center for Combating Antisemitism (CCA)has developed a
comprehensive training program titled "Antisemitism is Bad Medicine,"which aims to
educate healthcare professionals and staff on identifying and addressing antisemitism in
healthcare environments,reinforcing medical ethics,and promoting a safe and inclusive
environment for all patients and staff;and
WHEREAS,the City of Miami Beach is committed to ensuring that healthcare
professionals at the City's largest hospital,Mount Sinai Hospital,are equipped with the
tools to address antisemitism in the workplace,enhance sensitivity to cultural and
religious differences,and foster an inclusive and respectful environment for patients and
employees alike;and
WHEREAS,the Center has agreed to offer the "Antisemitism is Bad Medicine"
training program to up to 5,000 Mt.Sinai Hospital employees for a period of one year,
with a total cost of $50,000;and
WHEREAS,the City Commission believes that providing this critical training to
healthcare professionals at Mount.Sinai Hospital serves an important public purpose by
promoting the highest standards of care and ensuring that all patients and healthcare
providers are treated with dignity and respect,free from discrimination or bias.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,FLORIDA,that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby approve a grant in the amount of $50,000 to the Center for
Combating Antisemitism (Center)to enable the Center to provide antisemitism sensitivity
training sessions and make its online training program "Antisemitism is Bad Medicine"
available to up to 5,000 Mount Sinai Medical Center employees for a period of one year,
having determined that training healthcare professionals and staff at the city's largest
hospital serves an important public purpose,and directing the administration to identify
and allocate funding for this grant in FY 2025;and further,directing the Administration to
negotiate,and City Manager and City Clerk to execute,a grant agreement for the
foregoing purpose with the center in the city's standard form of grant agreement.
