A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,
FLORIDA,ADDING THE EXPANSION OF FUNDING FOR
THE VOLUNTARY PREKINDERGARTEN (VPK)
EDUCATION PROGRAM TO COVER THE COST OF A
FULL-DAY PREKINDERGARTEN PROGRAM FOR ALL
STUDENTS,AND TO INCLUDE PROGRAM OPTIONS FOR
THREE-YEAR-OLD STUDENTS TO THE CITY'S LIST OF
2025 STATE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES.
WHEREAS,each year,the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach
adopt a list of legislative priorities for the annual session of the State Legislature to
address issues critical to the City and its residents;and
WHEREAS,the City of Miami Beach is committed to providing high-quality early
childhood education and expanding access to Prekindergarten programs for its youngest
residents;and
WHEREAS,the City's current Miami Beach PreK Scholarship Program is designed
to expand access to PreK for four-year-old children by providing a full day of school at no
cost to families,with the state covering the first three hours of instruction,and the City
funding the last 2.5 hours to ensure a full day of PreK education for eligible children;and
WHEREAS,the City wishes to urge the State to expand funding for the Voluntary
Prekindergarten (VPK)education program sufficient to cover the cost of a full-day PreK
program for all students,as well as the expansion of program options for three-year-old
students in addition to the current four-year-old program;and
WHEREAS,expanding VPK to include three-year-olds will enhance access to
quality early childhood education for more families,fostering early learning and
development for children across the State of Florida;and
WHEREAS,the Mayor and City Commission direct the City Administration to add
the following priorities to the City's 2025 State Agenda:
•Expand funding for the VPK education program to cover the cost of a full-day
Prekindergarten program for all students;and
•Expand VPK to include program options for three-year-old students to ensure that
more families have access to early childhood education opportunities.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH,FLORIDA,that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby add the expansion of funding for the Voluntary Prekindergarten
(VPK)Education Program to cover the cost of a full-day Prekindergarten Program for all
students,and to include program options for three-year-old students to the City's list of
2025 State Legislative priorities.
