RESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ENCOURAGING MIAMI
BEACH GAY PRIDE, INC. TO ALLOW FULL PARTICIPATION OF
ALL PUBLIC AND ELECTED OFFICIALS IN THE GAY PRIDE
FESTIVAL AND PARADE.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach is a longstanding champion of diversity,
inclusion, and LGBTQ+ rights, earning a perfect 100-point score in the 2024 Human
Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach proudly supports Miami Beach Gay Pride,
Inc. through a $250,000 grant, in addition to waiving all permitting fees, and Miami Beach
Gay Pride, Inc. also receives support from Miami-Dade County and other public entities;
and
WHEREAS, Miami Beach Pride festival and parade is a premier multi-day
celebration of arts, culture, and LGBTQ+ visibility, attracting over 185,000 attendees and
serving as a vital platform for community engagement, unity, and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach is committed to fostering an environment
where diversity of thought and opinion is respected, and public events funded by taxpayer
dollars should remain open and accessible to all members of the community, including
public and elected officials; and
WHEREAS, by accepting City funding and support, Miami Beach Gay Pride, ,Inc.
is legally bound to comply with the City of Miami Beach Human Rights Ordinance, as
codified in Chapter 62 of the City Code; and
WHEREAS, the City's Human Rights Ordinance was amended in 2016 to add
political affiliation as a protected category, affirming the City's intent that "political activity,
association, and speech are cornerstones of life in this nation, state, and City," and
ensuring that no individual shall be excluded from participation in public services based
on a protected status, including publicly funded events; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach, pursuant to Chapter 62 of the City Code,
requires that all organizations receiving municipal funding uphold these principles of
fairness, non-discrimination, and inclusivity in all publicly supported programs and events;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission respectfully
encourage Miami Beach Gay Pride, Inc. to allow full participation of all public and elected
officials in the Gay Pride festival and parade, in accordance with the City's values and
legal protections that ensure an open and inclusive community.
