95-21722 Reso RESOLUTION NO. 95-21722 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, REAFFIRMING THE CITY'S SUPPORT FOR THE REBUILDING OF THE EXISTING WESTERNMOST BASCULE DRAWBRIDGE ON THE VENETIAN CAUSEWAY AND FURTHER URGING THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD,FLORIDA INLAND NAVIGATION DISTRICT,AND DADE COUNTY'S METROPOLITAN PLANNING ORGANIZATION TO PROCEED WITH THE DESIGN OF THE BRIDGE, AS PLANNED,WITH THE CURRENT SPAN OF THE MAXIMUM HEIGHT OF EIGHT AND A HALF FEET, IN ORDER TO CONTINUE TO PRESERVE THE BRIDGE'S APPEARANCE AND NOT JEOPARDIZE THE VENETIAN CAUSEWAY'S DESIGNATION IN THE ANNUAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES. WHEREAS,the Venetian Causeway is currently poised to undergo a proposed 25.9 million dollar reconstruction by the Florida Department of Transportation due to its deteriorated condition; and WHEREAS, the proposed continued bridge span of the current maximum height of eight and a half feet should be maintained in order to preserve the overall historic character and appearance of the Venetian Causeway, as well as assure its continued designation in the National Register of Historic Places; and WHEREAS,as the westernmost bascule drawbridge is to be replaced as part of the Venetian Causeway renovation,the City would urge the Dade County Metropolitan Planning Organization, when it considers the issue of the bridge span at its next regular meeting, and at anytime thereafter, that the current maximum height of eight and a half feet should be maintained, and would herein reaffirm its continued support for this design, as originally planned. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and City Commission hereby reaffirm the City's support for the rebuilding of the existing westernmost bascule drawbridge on the Venetian Causeway and further urges the United States Coast Guard, Florida Inland Navigation District, and Dade County's Metropolitan Planning Organization to proceed with the design of the bridge with the currently planned span of the maximum height of eight and a half feet, in order to continue to preserve the bridge's appearance and not jeopardize the Venetian Causeway's designation in the National Registry of Historic Places.
