A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA; AUTHORIZING CO-SPONSORSHIP BY THE CITY OF THE 1995
ROLEX/ORANGE BOWL INTERNATIONAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS,TO BE HELD AT
FLAMINGO PARK TENNIS CENTER ON DECEMBER 14TH THROUGH 24TH, 1995;
APPROVING THE WAIVER OF TENNIS FACILITIES RENTAL FEES IN THE AMOUNT OF
$2,000;AND AUTHORIZING EXPENDITURES IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED$14,000
FOR SITE ENHANCEMENTS INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, BLEACHER AND
CHAIR RENTALS, LANDSCAPING, CONTROL FENCING AND OTHER AMENITIES FOR
THE 1995 TOURNAMENT, WITH FUNDING TO BE ALLOCATED FROM 1995 RESORT
TAX COLLECTIONS.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach and the Orange Bowl Committee have successfully co-
sponsored the Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships for the past 48 years at Flamingo
Park; and
WHEREAS, these tennis championships have produced numerous national, international and world
class amateur players, many of whom have gone on to top levels in professional tennis; and
WHEREAS, the Rolex/ Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships have an extensive
economic impact on the City and its tourism industry, generating an estimated $5,299,525 in revenues, based
on an analysis of the1993 Tournament; and
WHEREAS, the Rolex/Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships is the largest and single
most successful Junior Tennis Tournament in the world, and viewed by millions via international media
coverage on television, in newspapers and magazines.
NOW,THEREFORE BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Administration is authorized to provide the City's co-sponsorship
of the 1995 Rolex/Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships; waive tennis facilities rental fees in the
amount of $2,000; and expend an amount not to exceed $14,000 for site enhancements including, but not
limited to, bleacher and chair rentals, landscaping, control fencing and other amenities for the 1995
tournament, with funding to be allocated from the 1995 Resort Tax C ctions.

Approve the Resolution.
BACKGROUND
The City of Miami Beach has worked cooperatively with the Orange Bowl Committee for the past 48 years to produce
the largest and single most successful Junior international tennis tournament in the world. The 1995 Rolex/Orange
Bowl International Tennis Championships to be held on December 14-24, 1995 at Flamingo Park will again attract the
top ranked amateur junior players from over 79 counties. This will be the 49th year of Rolex/ Orange Bowl
International Championships and with the approval of the recommended enhancements is projected to be the most
successful to date. It should also be noted that both the City and the Orange Bowl Committee are already discussing
events in anticipation of the tournament's 50th year anniversary.
ANALYSIS
According to an economic impact analysis provided by the Orange Bowl Committee the 1993 Rolex/Orange Bowl
International Championships hosted 672 players and over 4000 additional guests who accompanied the players. Based
on an average stay of 5.5 days in the area and all other factors taken into consideration,the tournament produced an
economic impact of$5,299,525.
The 1994 Rolex/Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships were reported throughout the world via television,
as well in newspapers and magazines. It is estimated that over 1 million individuals watched the tournament finals on
ESPN and several million others followed the progress of the tournament through other media sources. The benefits
of participating in this tournament are an increase in tourism, positive public relations and the opportunity for our
residents,tourists and guests to attend a world class sporting event.

CONCLUSION
It is recommended that the Mayor and City Commission approve the attached resolution authorizing co-sponsorship
by the City of the 1995 Rolex/Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships, approving the waiver of tennis
facilities rental fees in the amount of$2,000,and authorizing expenditures not to exceed 14,000 for site enhancements
including but not limited to bleacher and chairs rentals,landscaping,control fencing and other amenities for the 1995
tournament,funding to be allocated from the 1995 Resort Tax Collections.
