The purpose of this Letter to Commission (L TC) is to notify the Mayor and City Commission that the City of Miami Beach will proclaim April 25, 2025 as Arbor Day. This holiday celebrates trees and is typically observed on the last Friday of April in the United States to raise awareness about the importance of trees for the environment and human well-being. Trees provide shade for pedestrian comfort and health, minimize the urban heat island effect, absorb rainfall and mitigate stormwater, provide aesthetic appeal and property values, sequester carbon and provide habitat for wildlife. In conjunction with the Arbor Day proclamation, the City of Miami Beach will celebrate with a Tree Giveaway for residents at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens at 2000 Convention Center Drive between the hours of 10 am to 12 pm. Florida-friendly trees, including silver buttonwood, mango, avocado and starfruit, were selected for this year's giveaway. The species were chosen based on residents' feedback for fruiting and canopy options.
