A RESOLUM . OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, CONSENTING TO THE
APPOINTMENT OF JORGE GOMEZ AS PLANNING DIRECTOR FOR
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH.
TO:
SUBJECT:
ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION
Adopt the Resolution.
BACKGROUND
Upon graduating from the University of Miami in 1981 with a Bachelor's degree in architecture,
Jorge Gomez began what would become a distinguished and comprehensive career in the Planning
Department of the City of Miami Beach. As Management Intern II, he was charged with such duties
as data collection, research, and field investigation for the preparation of planning and zoning reports
and presentations. It was in 1984 that Mr. Gomez' crucial collaboration with the City's quasi-
judicial land use bodies started, as his promotion to Management Intern III expanded his duties to
include service as technical staff to the Historic Preservation Board, as well as site plan analyses and
the preparation of reports and recommendations to the Planning Board and the Board of Adjustment.
While Mr. Gomez continued to provide staff assistance to the aforementioned boards in his role as
Planner, he was also called upon to provide teclmical assistance to developers and residents in the
areas of zoning, consistency with the Comprehensive Plan, and compliance with City regulations.
He was the principal author and coordinator in the preparation of the City of Miami Beach Capital
Improvement Program in 1985.
Mr. Gomez has also served as technical staff to the Design Review Board. While his solid
knowledge and understanding of the complexities of this field were readily apparent, he
demonstrated his abilities as an effective manager as well when his duties as Senior Planner were
broadened to include the supervision and coordination of support staff.
AGENDA ITEM
QlE-
l-I-qq
DATE
His steady ascension through the ranks to become Principal Planner, and most recently, Planning and
Zoning Manager, has involved participation in the drafting of policies and guidelines of intricate
detail and vital importance for the City. The creation of height restrictions, reduction of floor area
ratios, and changes to zoning and future Land Use maps to create compatible development with the
existing neighborhood character, are only a few of the issues Mr. Gomez has effectively tackled.
As the attached resume illustrates, Mr. Gomez' inclusive background, extensive knowledge, and
historical perspective of our City's planning challenges amply qualify him to assume the position
of Planning Director upon the departure of incumbent Dean Grandin.
CONCLUSION
Pursuant to the requirements of Article IV, Section 4.02(b) of the City of Miami Beach Charter, it
is recommended that the Mayor and the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution consenting
to the appointment of Jorge Gomez as the Planning Director for the City of Miami Beach.
