I have been proud of the events that have occurred on Miami Beach over the past two years, however, I believe that our city should be the sponsor of such an important event which has been so well received. My hope is that with the full support of the administration, as we do on July 4 th , we can and should take the responsibility to produce and sponsor Veterans Day. ask that my fellow Commissioners embrace this idea. But it wasn't that way back in 1943. Then, in the middle of World War II, Sgt. Conni Gordon was one of the few females that signed up for the U.S. Marines. "There was no other corps for me I just had to be a Marine," Gordon said. And there was no cutting comers for the women. Page 2 of2 WATCH Meet Miami's Oldest Female Marine "They told us nothing. We took the same tests as the men. Get up at four in the morning and walk with a 50-pound bag and wow, we did it," said Sgt. Gordon. "The few of us who were women were very proud." Gordon spent her time at Marine bases on the East Coast, almost went off to be a Marine pilot, but says her biggest contribution to the war effort was teaching Marines how to draw. "They said to me years later that it kept their sanity when they were in foxholes and it made them feel normal," Gordon recalled. Of course, much has changed since Gordon was one of the first female Marines. Women today are fighter pilots and going into combat. "I think it's fantastic they treat the women the same as the men and it's an opportunity for everybody," says Gordon. This day for Gordon was a reflection of the time she served America, and a chance for others to say thank you. Lisa Perez attended festivities in Miami Bea~ch on Thursday to remember her son, Sgt Jason Vasq)lez, who was killed in Afghanistan one month after he arrived there. "I am so proud of my son and all of the others who are serving. I hope they are able to come back home safely to their family and loved ones," said Perez.
