My understanding is the city gives 15 calendar days from the date the bill is printed to receive the payment. If you look when the bills deliver that can be as much as one week or more after the printed date, then the resident pays the check and mails it and it can take a couple of days for the post office to deliver the payment. This means city residents -tax payers must pay their bill immediately upon arrival or set up automatic deductions from their bank account or receive onerous penalties for late payments. Federal law now requires credit card companies to give 21 days from the mdate "Under the credit card law, issuers have to give card account holders "a reasonable amount of time" to make payments on monthly bills. That means payments are due at least 21 days after they are mailed or delivered. Consumers have complained about due dates that change without notice or are moved up, giving them less time to pay their bills and increasing the likelihood of late fees. " Shouldn't the city do as much for its residents? Thanks for your help. Kim Eiber PS. The penalties assessed for even 1 day late is almost 10% of the bill. Because of the holidays, the December bills were delayed in arriving. I think if you check the bills that went out the following month (mid-January) you will see that an inordinate amount of tax paying residents had penalties assessed from receiving their bill with such short notice the month before.
