LTC 207-2025 Hurricane Preparedness for City's Elder PopulationDocusign Envelope ID: 744FCC06-4FDE-4ACB-88ED-149E0CC3F5F3 MIAMI BEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER LTC#207-2025 LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: FROM: Honorable Mayor Steven Meiner and Members of the City Commission Eric Carpenter, City Manager May 19, 2025 DATE: SUBJECT: Hurricane Preparedness for City's Elder Population The purpose of this L TC is to advise you of hurricane preparedness information being brought to elder-serving buildings in the City of Miami Beach by the Office of Housing and Community Services (OHCS), the Fire Department Division of Emergency Management (DEM) and the American Red Cross. Following Hurricane Irma in 2017, the City Commission passed Resolution 2018-30261 identifying buildings designated as elder-serving and directed City staff to address and promote safe evacuation of elder residents during severe weather and to assist building management of residential buildings that receive City funding with 51 % or more of their tenants aged 62 and older with providing information about the County's Emergency Evacuation Assistance Program (EEAP) and encouraging participation in the program. OHCS and DEM schedule and visit with each of the identified buildings to present hurricane preparedness information to the seniors living there before the upcoming hurricane season. Working as a team alongside representatives from American Red Cross they speak directly to the tenants, providing not only information about registration in the EEAP, but also encouraging them to have kits and evacuation plans prepared. If needed, staff from DEM provide additional assistance. The building management are also provided with copies of the City's comprehensive Hurricane Guide in both English and Spanish. This is part of the Division of Emergency Management's ongoing efforts to increase readiness and empower residents and businesses to make the right decisions for their safety.
