LTC 224-2025 Text-to-911 System Goes Live - June 1, 2025Docusign Envelope ID: 4344F79A-CEAF-4C49-80C8-763BD75E0942 MIAMI BEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER LTC# LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: FROM: Honorable Mayor Steven Meinetd ;1:e City Commission DATE: Eric Carpenter, City Manager ,J.,{/ v May 30, 2025 SUBJECT: Text-to-911 System Goes Live -June 1, 2025 The purpose of this L TC is to advise you that the City's Fire Department Public Safety Communications Division (PSCD) is going live on June 1, 2025, with the Text-to-911 system. The Text-to-911 feature will be deployed countywide across all seven 911 centers: Miami-Dade Sheriffs Office, which accounts for Unincorporated Miami-Dade County and 29 jurisdictions/municipalities, City of Miami, Hialeah, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Aventura, and Pinecrest. Residents and visitors will be able to text 911 via any major wireless provider. This will allow individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing and/or speech-impaired to communicate with emergency operators much more easily. Also, text messages are an option to contact emergency authorities in situations where remaining silent is crucial for safety and security or when unable to place a call due to reception. The PSCD will address 911 voice calls and text messages through the same user interface ensuring a seamless response process. However, calling 911 should remain the first choice whenever possible, as voice communication allows for faster information exchange and response coordination. Text-to-911 is intended as a valuable alternative when calling is not safe or feasible. ShoullY"«have any questions, please contact Fire Chief Digna Abella. EC/D.A: 224-2025
