A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO
ENHANCE PUBLIC SAFETY MEASURES BY IMPLEMENTING A 2-WEEK
PILOT PROGRAM ASSIGNING AT LEAST ONE (1) MIAMI BEACH POLICE
OFFICER TO PATROL EACH OF THE 100 BLOCKS BETWEEN OCEAN
DRIVE AND 7T" THROUGH 12T" STREETS IN ORDER TO INCREASE
VISIBILITY AND ENHANCE ENFORCEMENT WITH A FOCUS ON
NARCOTICS ACTIVITY, LOITERING AND PROWLING, AND EXCESSIVE
VEHICLE NOISE.
WHEREAS, Ocean Drive is world-renowned as a vibrant entertainment and arts and
cultural district that draws large crowds of residents, locals and tourists, but experiences
certain public safety challenges that have raised some concerns about maintaining a
welcoming environment for residents, visitors, and businesses alike; and
WHEREAS, the safety, security, and overall quality of life for residents, businesses,
and visitors in the City remains a top priority for the City Commission; and
WHEREAS, the area between Ocean Drive and 7th through 12th Streets represents
a high-traffic corridor with a concentration of pedestrian activity, nightlife, and vehicular
congestion, which often gives rise to quality-of-life concerns, including narcotics-related
offenses, loitering and prowling, and excessive vehicle noise; and
WHEREAS, enhancing police visibility and presence in these areas is a proven
strategy for deterring criminal activity, ensuring compliance with City ordinances and State
laws, and reassuring residents and visitors as to the safety of the area; and
WHEREAS, the Administration recommends the staffing and deployment of on-duty
MBPD officers and specialized unit police officers to patrol the 100 blocks between Ocean
Drive and 7�' to 12�' Streets, seven (7) days per week, as a two (2) week Pilot Program to
be extended as necessary; and
WHEREAS, these patrol efforts would be carried out using existing, on-duty police
personnel resources so as to not incur any additional budgetary impact; and
WHEREAS, the Administration believes that assigning at least one (1) MBPD officer
to patrol each of the 100 blocks between Ocean Drive and 7th through 12th Streets will
provide a strategic opportunity to enhance visibility, increase enforcement, and deter illegal
or disruptive conduct.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby direct the Administration to enhance public safety measures by
implementing a 2-week Pilot Program assigning at least one (1) Miami Beach Police O�cer
to patrol each of the 100 blocks behveen Ocean Drive and 7th through 12th Streets in order
to increase visibility and enhance enforcement with a focus on narcotics activity, loitering
and prowling, and excessive vehicle noise.
