Dear neighbours,
In light of the Commission's silence regarding the outrageous call by State Rep. Randy Fine for Israel
to nuke Gaza, I reject as hypocritical the motion by Comm. Suarez for censure of my intentionally blunt
language in a letter to the New York Times calling for the same from the opposite point of view
regarding an Iranian response to its attackers. Let Commissioners who support the 1st Amendment
oppose this biased anti-constitutional item and support my reappointment to Sustainability Cttee or
vote to censure Rep. Fine and call for his resignation. Those who might excuse his language as
impassioned rhetoric should extend the same respect for constitutionally protected freedom of speech
to all appointees and elected officials, even those who like our extremist mayor and his fellow
ideologue, Comm. Suarez repeatedly violate the public's constitutional rights and engage in hate
speech and ethnically targeted denigration of those of their fellow Jews who oppose genocide against
the Palestinian people and the Commission's insistence on complicity by way of purchasing--the solely
permitted--Israel bonds.
Progressive Commissioners and candidates who think they can avoid controversy by abandoning free
speech principles may find themselves targeted next or in fact already targeted by the thuggish
Commissioner. Those who have the courage to stand up to bullies may find greater support among
voters concerned about protecting democracy and freedom of expression, even that disfavoured by
extremist politicians and agents of a genocide-indicted foreign aggressor regime.
I call upon the City Attorney to cite the State statute or municipal regulation deemed to override
appointees' First Amendment rights upon which said Office based its apparent opinion pressuring my
appointing Commissioner to rescind my appointment to Sustainability Cttee.
I call upon concerned residents to rebuff this attempt at censorship and silencing of protected speech
by contacting the Mayor and Commissioners and by submitting remarks at the Sutnik Hour at next
Wednesday's Miami Beach Commission meeting.
Thank you,
Johann for MCC
