SOBESAFE is pleased to recognize a number of positive developments in the
governance of Miami Beach, developments that are reflected in several of the items
on the agenda for the Commission Meeting of June 25.
•Above all,we are pleased to see continued Commission emphasis on improving
the quality of life in South Beach, especially in Lummus Park and on Ocean
Drive.
•We are also very pleased with the many steps underway making the police
more efficient and effective (e.g.,Real-Time Intelligence Center, cops visible
on the street -on 41 st St [we'd love to see more PD street-level visibility in SoBe
also]).
We specifically support the following items:
1
R7 S -Quality-of-Life Task Force
Creates a specialized city task force focused on enforcing camping and quality-of-life
ordinances, with emphasis on high-traffic areas. The Task Force should explicitly
include Ocean Drive and Lummus Park.
C4 R-Jurisdiction Over Ocean Drive
Referral to the Neighborhoods Committee:whether the City should petition the County
to transfer control of Ocean Drive to Miami Beach. The City has extensive experience
in the negative impact on safety and quality of life that results from its limited authority
over traffic and zoning on Ocean Drive. The current cumbersome,multi-jurisdictional
approval process needs improvement.Changing it is a long-term process, but there is
no time like the present to begin.
C7 AU-Ocean Drive Patrol Pilot
A resolution to establish a 2-week pilot assigning MBPD officers to patrol Ocean Drive
from 7to 12 Street,to increase visibility and address noise, narcotics, and loitering.
However,2 weeks seems too short a time for a pilot;and the test can only be most
effective at a time when there is much more of a challenge,i.e.,in the winter, not the
summer season.
Note that speeding traffic remains a significant danger on OD.
C7 BC-Turtle-Friendly Lighting
A resolution to obtain a cost estimate for phasing out gas-powered floodlights in
Lummus Park during sea turtle season, and replacing them with shielded amber/red
LED lighting.Well-designed floodlights are an important police tool, but the police
cannot use the current floodlights during turtle season.
