SL Patrick Catholic Parish has been an integral part of the Miami Beach wmmuniry since its
inception in 1926. The church's journey began with a generous donation from Cad G. Fisher, a
prominent Miami Beach developer, who provided five polo stables to Father Barry for use as a
Parish and school. The frst mass was held in a refurbished stable on June 2. 1926, marking the
birth of Miami Beach Catholicism. Despite Ihe devastation caused by a violent hurricane on
Seplember 17, 1926, which destroyed [he Parish and school buildings, Father Barry and the
parishioners' resilience led to the swifl repair and opening of the school just two weeks later.
The hurricane only srengthened Father Barry's resolve lo establish a permanent Parish and
school structure. By 1928, a site behveen 39th and 40th Streets was chosen, and plans for new
strucWres, including a Parish, rectory, convent, school, recreation hall, and auditorium, were set
in molion. The cornerstone for the Parish was laid on February 22, 1928. During World War II,
the church played a crucial role by allowing the army to use all parish facilities, positively impacting
the community and filling Sunday services lo capacity. Over the years, SL Patrick Catholic Parish
has not only served as a place of worship but aiso as a community hub, providing support and
services during critical times.
