"I hereby attest to the accuracy and truthfulness of the application and have received, read and will abide by Chapter 2, Article VII — of the City Code "Standards of Conduct for City Officers, Employees and Agency Members." I Stephen Sauls agreed to the following terms on Received in the City Clerk's Office by: Name of Deputy Clerk Control No. Date 18 Steve Sauls Vice President for Governmental Relations (retired Dec. 2014) Florida International University An active champion of Miami and Miami Beach since 1980, Steve Sauls has spent much of the past 24 years helping to build Florida International University (FIU), into a top public research university and a South Florida anchor institution. Following a successful career in Washington, D.C. and Tallahassee, Sauls made South Florida his home. A 5th generation Floridian, he moved to Miami Beach in 1991 when he purchased and restored 1700 James Avenue as his home (now Casa Tua). In the early days of the economic renaissance of South Beach, he was recognized for the quality of this restoration. Subsequently, he served as a founding member and later chair of the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council. He was the founding chair of the Miami Beach Arts Trust. While credited with many achievements on behalf of FIU and the entire community, Sauls is particularly proud of obtaining permanent annual operating funds for the Wolfsonian-FIU, This effort allowed FIU to accept Mickey Wolfson's monumental gift of a world class museum to FIU and secure its retention and sustainability on Miami Beach. Previously, in the late 80s, Sauls obtained funds to restore the Lincoln Theater on Lincoln road for the New World Symphony and funds to develop streetscape improvements on Miami Beach, south of 5th Street. A successful strategist, Sauls played critical roles in FIU's winning efforts to establish and fund both a law school and a medical school and funding to expand graduate programs. Through legislative initiatives, he obtained millions of dollars in research funds following Hurricane Andrew for the International Hurricane Research Center. His FIU lobbying secured more than $500 million for academic construction projects. During a 14 month "sabbatical" at the global corporate headquarters of Office Depot, Sauls never waivered from his commitment to South Florida. As Vice President of Corporate Relations at Office Depot, Sauls launched the Fortune 150 company's governmental relations program and a $7.5 million "Education and Diversity Partnership" including a $2 million donation to FIU's College of Business. He also oversaw environmental performance and managed community relations for the company. With more than 40 years of governmental relations experience both in Washington, DC and South Florida, Sauls maintains an extensive public affairs network, His career includes having served as a senior political and legislative advisor, lobbyist, fund-raiser and communications strategist for Florida elected officials including former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham, Florida House Speaker Tom Gustafson, Commissioner of Education Ralph Turlington and two Members of Congress. Sauls Bio, Page 2 19 Sauls is the author of the Refugee Education Assistance Act of 1980 which was created to provide educational assistance and social services to Marie! and Haitian refugees who where heavily impacting Miami Beach following their arrival. His environmental work includes working with Governor Graham in the mid-80s to resurrect the Everglades Coalition as part of the Save the Everglades program and secure the federal purchase of Fakahatchee Strand to protect Florida panther habitat. Sauls Short Bio, Page 2 In addition to a Masters in Public Administration (public finance) from George Washington University, A Vietnam veteran, Sauls earned a BS in Journalism (public relations) from the University of Florida with high honors. At UF, he was Editor-in-Chief of the daily student newspaper, The Florida Alligator, and a member of Florida Blue Key. In Miami, he has been an active member of the community. Before retirement he served on the executive committee of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and Seven/50, Southeast Florida's 50 year/seven county regional planning project. In Washington, he served as President of the UF Gator Club and the Florida State Society. Sauls launched FIU's successful University City economic development initiative with the City of Sweetwater, to build a new urban community integrated with the university. In addition to winning a coveted U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER grant, this catalytic initiative has stimulated in more than $150 million in public and private investment. In addition to FIU, Sauls has been recognized for his lifetime work by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the American Association of Public Universities and Miami- Dade County Days, as well as Members of Congress and legislative leaders in Tallahassee. He was honored with the proclamation of Steve Sauls Day on December 14, 2015 by the Miami-Dade County Office of the Mayor and the Board of County Commissioners. The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities will be recognizing him at their annual meeting on Miami Beach next Fall. Despite these achievements, Sauls considers his greatest accomplishments to be the successes of the many students he has mentored and with whom he regularly consults, He currently serves on the advisory board of the New Leaders Council, dedicated to cultivating Miami-Dade County's next generation of community leaders and is an informal advisor to SaveDade.
