A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORiDA, EXPRESSING COMMITMENT TO IDENTIFY A
REDUCTION IN THE FISCAL YEAR 2026 BUDGET DURING THE FISCAL
YEAR 2026 BUDGET PROCESS THAT WILL ENABLE THE CITY TO FUND AN
ADDITIONAL $70,000 FOR SENIOR MEAL SERVICES TO BRING THE TOTAL
CITY FUNDING SUPPORT FOR UNIDAD OF MIAMI BEACH, INC. TO $350,000
FOR FY 2026 AND DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO CONTINUE TO
USE THIS HIGHER TOTAL AMOUNT, ADJUSTED BY CPI, IN FUTURE
BUDGET YEARS.
WHEREAS, Unidad of Miami Beach, Inc. ("Unidad") provides essential senior meal
services to the residents of Miami Beach, ensuring that vulnerable seniors receive
nutritious meals and support; and
WHEREAS, on May 21, 2025, the Mayor and City Commission adopted Resolution
No. 2025-33693 increasing the funding to Unidad by$70,000 to increase the service level
from 120 meals to 150 per day through September 30, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Unidad will continue to need additional funding in fiscal year 2026 and
beyond to sustain this level of service; and
WHEREAS, Unidad receives funding from the federal government through the
Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), established under the Older
Americans Act, to enable the employment of four seniors who operate the senior meal
program; and
WHEREAS, there has been a delay in the release of funding by SCSEP by the
Department of Labor and there are concerns that the funding may be reduced or
eliminated; and
WHEREAS, the additional funding authorized pursuant to this Resolution will
enable Unidad to continue to employ the four seniors that currently operate the meal
program; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach recognizes the importance of supporting its
senior residents and ensuring they have access to necessary services that enhance their
quality of life; and
WHEREAS, food insecurity remains a significant issue for many seniors, with limited
income and rising food costs making it increasingly difficult for them to afford nutritious meals;
and
WHEREAS, the cost of food has continued to rise, placing additional financial
strain on seniors who are already on fixed incomes; and
WHEREAS, senior meal programs not only provide essential nutrition but also
offer opportunities for socialization, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness among
seniors; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission are committed to identifying a
reduction in the fiscal year 2026 budget that will allow for the allocation of an additional
$70,000 for senior meal services, bringing the total City funding support for Unidad of
Miami Beach, Inc. to $350,000 for FY 2026; and
WHEREAS, the Administration is directed to continue to use this higher amount,
adjusted by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), in future budget years to ensure the
sustainability of senior meal services provided by Unidad;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby express their commitment to identify a reduction in the fiscal year
2026 budget during the fiscal year 2026 budget process that will enable the City to fund
an additional $70,000 for senior meal services to bring the total City funding support for
Unidad of Miami Beach, Inc. to $350,000 for FY 2026 and direct the Administration to
continue to use this higher total amount, adjusted by CPI, in future budget years.
