RESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO
REQUEST A PROPOSAL FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI COLLEGE OF
ENGINEERING AND DR. SOLO-GABRIELE TO CONDUCT A WATER
QUALITY STUDY AT THE 73RD STREET BEACH PUMP AND THE PUMP
STATIONS#27 AND#28 ON WEST AVENUE,AND TO REPORT BACK TO THE
CITY COMMISSION WITH THE PROPOSED SCOPE, TIMELINE, AND COST
OF THE STUDY.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach is committed to maintaining and improving the quality
of its waterways and Biscayne Bay as they are critical to environmental, economic, and
recreational prosperity, and to the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of the City of Miami
Beach; and
WHEREAS, the 73rd Street beach pump and the pump stations #27 and #28 on West
Avenue are critical components of the City's stormwater management system and are located in
areas of high public use and environmental sensitivity; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission seeks to better understand the microbial and
environmental conditions at these locations to inform future infrastructure planning, maintenance,
and public health strategies; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Helena Solo-Gabriele,Associate Dean for the University of Miami College
of Engineering, is a globally recognized expert in water quality and microbial evaluation in water
and sediments, and has extensive experience conducting environmental assessments in coastal
and urban settings; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission desire to engage the University of Miami
College of Engineering and Dr. Solo-Gabriele to conduct a comprehensive water quality study at
the identified pump stations; and
WHEREAS, the City has previously engaged the services of University of Miami College
of Engineering and Dr. Solo-Gabriele to conduct a comprehensive water quality study at the Park
View Island Canal.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby direct the City Administration to request a proposal from the University of
Miami College of Engineering and Dr. Solo-Gabriele to conduct a water quality study at the 73rd
Street beach pump and the pump stations #27 and #28 on West Avenue, and to report back to
the City Commission with the proposed scope, timeline, and cost of the study.
