Police Department Surpasses National Homicide and Robbery Clearance Rates
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission (L TC) is to provide the Mayor and City
Commission an update on the Miami Beach Police Department's notable robbery and
homicide clearance rates, reflecting the Department's commitment to maintaining a secure
and vibrant community for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
The Miami Beach Police Department case clearance rates stand well above the national
clearance rate average. As reported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform
Crime Reporting (UCR) Program for 2023, the national homicide case clearance rate is
52.3% in comparison to 100% by the Miami Beach Department in both 2024 and year-to
date in 2025. Similarly, robbery cases nationally are cleared at a reported rate of 30.5%.
The Department had a clearance rate of 59.77% -twice the national average -in 2024
and 51.0% year-to-date in 2025.
The Miami Beach Police Department continues to leverage digital evidence and data
collected from Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) and City CCTV systems to
generate timely and actionable investigative leads. This strategic use of technology has
been instrumental in detectives' sustained success and consistently higher-than-average
clearance rates. With the recent integration of advanced technological and analytic
resources within the Real-Time Intelligence Center (RTIC), clearance rates are anticipated
to continue rising, further enhancing the Department's investigative capabilities and
responsiveness.
These impressive clearance outcomes underscore the effectiveness of a proactive
policing model and the unwavering dedication of the men and women of the MBPD. The
data also highlights the importance of strong collaboration with elected officials,
community partners, and the continued investment in cutting-edge technology that
empowers our Detectives to identify suspects, locate vehicles, and bring criminal
offenders to justice.
