A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, RECOGNIZING OCTOBER 2025 AS LGBTQIA+ HISTORY
MONTH IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, IN HONOR OF THE LGBTQIA+
COMMUNITY'S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY'S CULTURE, HISTORY, AND
CIVIC LIFE, INCLUDING LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE STRUGGLE
FOR EQUALITY, AND IN RECOGNITION OF THE CONTINUED STRUGGLE
FOR EQUALITY FOR THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach has long stood as a beacon of inclusion, diversity,
and pride, and has historically recognized and celebrated the contributions of the LGBTQIA+
community to the City's cultural, civic, and economic vitality; and
WHEREAS, October is nationally recognized as LGBTQIA+ History Month, a time to honor
the legacy, resilience, and achievements of LGBTQIA+ individuals, and to reflect on the ongoing
struggle for equality and justice; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach and its residents have played a pivotal role in
advancing LGBTQIA+ rights, including successfully defending Miami -Dade County's landmark
Human Rights Ordinance that protects LGBTQIA+ people from discrimination; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach participated in the successful lawsuit that brought
marriage equality to Florida and contributed to the nationwide movement for marriage equality in
the United States; and
WHEREAS, advocates in Miami -Dade County, including members of the Miami Beach
community, were instrumental in winning the lawsuit that overturned the State of Florida's ban on
adoption of children by gay and lesbian people, ensuring loving families for countless children;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach continues to support and celebrate the achievements
of the LGBTQIA+ community, including leadership in public service, arts, business, and civic
engagement, and ongoing efforts to promote equality, dignity, and acceptance for all; and
WHEREAS, October also marks the kidnapping and brutal murder of Matthew Shepard,
whose tragic death in 1998 became a catalyst for national hate crime legislation and a symbol of
the urgent need to protect LGBTQIA+ lives and dignity; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach wish to formally
recognize October 2025 as LGBTQIA+ History Month and reaffirm the City's unwavering support
for the LGBTQIA+ community, honoring both the victories won and the resilience shown in the
face of adversity; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a
community where all people —regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity —can live with
dignity, safety, and pride, and looks forward to a future of greater inclusion, compassion, and
hope.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby recognize October 2025 as LGBTQIA+ History Month in the City of Miami
Beach, in honor of the LGBTQIA+ community's contributions to the City's culture, history, and
civic life, and in recognition of the continued struggle for equality for the LGBTQIA+ community.
