A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, STANDING IN SOLIDARITY WITH
THE VENEZUELAN COMMUNITY, SHARING THEIR OPTIMISM
FOLLOWING THE APPREHENSION OF NICOLAS MADURO, AND
EXPRESSING HOPE FOR A PEACEFUL TRANSITION TO
DEMOCRACY IN VENEZUELA, CALLING FOR THE RELEASE OF ALL
POLITICAL PRISONERS, AND AFFIRMING SUPPORT FOR
DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES AND HUMAN RIGHTS.
WHEREAS, Nicolas Maduro, the repressive dictator of Venezuela, has been
widely accused of undermining democratic institutions, committing human rights
violations, and contributing to widespread economic and social instability in Venezuela;
and
WHEREAS, the capture by U.S. forces of Nicolas Maduro on January 3, 2026
marks a significant turning point for the Venezuelan people and the international
community's efforts to restore democratic governance and the rule of law in Venezuela;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach is home to a diverse and vibrant community
that includes many residents with familial, cultural, and historical ties to Venezuela; and
WHEREAS, democratic governance, respect for human rights, the rule of law, and
free and fair elections are fundamental values shared by the residents of the City of Miami
Beach and the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, the people of Venezuela have endured prolonged political, economic,
and humanitarian challenges that have significantly affected their quality of life and basic
freedoms; and
WHEREAS, a peaceful transition to democracy would provide hope for stability,
prosperity, and the restoration of fundamental rights for the Venezuelan people, including
the release of political prisoners unjustly detained under the Maduro regime; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission recognize the resilience of
Venezuelans and stand in solidarity with their aspirations for freedom, justice, and
democratic governance; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach expresses its hope that this historic
development will lead to a peaceful transition to democracy, free and fair elections, and
the restoration of fundamental rights for all Venezuelans.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan community, share their
optimism following tho apprehension of Nicolas Maduro, express hope for a peaceful
transition to democracy in Venezuela, call for the release of all political prisoners, and
affirm support for democratic principles and human rights.
