FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 19, 2025 City of Miami Beach and the Consul General of Mexico Celebrate Benito Juárez Day
— A joint ceremony will be held on March 20 in Collins Park — Miami Beach, FL – The City of Miami Beach and Consulate General of Mexico in Miami will commemorate Mexican revolutionary hero and former president Benito Juárez during a special ceremony on Thursday, March 20 at 4 p.m. in collaboration with the city’s Hispanic Affairs Committee. The celebration will take place in Collins Park at 21 Street and Collins Avenue by the permanent, 2-foot bronze bust of Juarez, which was gifted to the city by Mexico’s government
last year. “Benito Juárez championed democracy and justice,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner.
“As leaders, we honor his legacy by ensuring fairness, equal opportunity, and the rule of law in our communities.”
Juárez led Mexico through a period of significant political and social transformation in the 19th century, defeating foreign forces like the Austrian Maximilian I, who sought to control the country. His leadership led to vital reforms, including the establishment of secular education and the protection of religious freedoms.
Consul General of Mexico in Miami Rutilio Escandón Cadenas shared “It is an honor that Mexico is present with the figure of Benito Juárez, a tireless defender of equal rights for all
people without distinction of origin, race, or color, with recognition and respect for diversity, plurality, and freedom of expression. Values that define Mexican humanism with unquestionable ethical principles that seek universal prosperity.” ###
