HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2026-34137RESOLUTION NO. 2026-34137 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO EVALUATE THE FEASIBILITY OF CREATING AN ACCESS POINT AND AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) COMPLIANT RAMP AT THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE INTERSECTION OF SIXTH STREET AND WEST AVENUE TO ENABLE A CROSSWALK LOCATED BETWEEN THE SOUTHEAST AND SOUTHWEST CORNERS; AND DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO EVALUATE THE FEASIBILITY AND APPROPRIATENESS OF INSTALLING SPEED CUSHIONS, SPEED BUMPS, OR OTHER TRAFFIC CALMING MEASURES AT THAT LOCATION ALONG WEST AVENUE TO SLOW VEHICLES EXITING THE CITY; AND FURTHER, DIRECTING THAT THE RESULTS OF SUCH EVALUATION BE PRESENTED TO THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION WITHIN THIRTY (30) DAYS. WHEREAS, the intersection of Sixth Street and West Avenue serves as a major gateway for vehicles exiting the City and experiences significant vehicular and pedestrian activity due to residential buildings in the area; and WHEREAS, the absence of an accessible pedestrian connection between the southeast and southwest corners of the intersection presents challenges for pedestrians, including individuals with disabilities, seniors, and families with strollers or young children; and WHEREAS, the City is committed to enhancing pedestrian safety, promoting walkability, and ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA"); and WHEREAS, the creation of an access point and ADA-compliant ramp at the southwest corner of the intersection of Sixth Street and West Avenue could enable a pedestrian crosswalk between the southeast and southwest corners of the intersection and improve pedestrian mobility and safety; and WHEREAS, traffic speeds at the intersection also pose safety concerns for pedestrians attempting to cross Sixth Street and West Avenue, particularly for vulnerable users, and traffic calming measures such as speed cushions, speed bumps, or alternative design interventions may reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety; and WHEREAS, the feasibility, appropriateness, engineering, safety, accessibility, operational, fiscal, and regulatory considerations associated with the proposed pedestrian and traffic calming improvements should be assessed, and potential funding sources, grants, partnerships, or other financial mechanisms to support implementation should be identified, with findings and recommendations to be reported to the Mayor and City Commission. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission direct the City Administration to evaluate the feasibility of creating an access point and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant ramp at the Southwest corner of the intersection of Sixth Street and West Avenue to enable a crosswalk located between the Southeast and Southwest corners; and directing the City Administration to evaluate the feasibility and appropriateness of installing speed cushions, speed bumps, or other traffic calming measures at that location along West Avenue to slow vehicles exiting the City; and further, directing that the results of such evaluation be presented to the Mayor and City Commission within thirty (30) days.
