A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, MAKING THE ALLOCATION OF
FUNDING FOR PERMANENT LIGHTING AT THE POLO PARK
BASKETBALL COURTS A BUDGET PRIORITY DURING THE FY 2027
BUDGET PROCESS; AND FURTHER, DIRECTING THE CITY
ADMINISTRATION TO MAINTAIN THE EXISTING TEMPORARY
LIGHTING AT POLO PARK UNTIL SUCH TIME AS PERMANENT
LIGHTING IS INSTALLED.
WHEREAS, Polo Park is a valued public recreational space that serves residents
and visitors to the City of Miami Beach ("City"), providing important opportunities for
physical activity, youth engagement, and community gathering; and
WHEREAS, the basketball courts at Polo Park are heavily utilized, particularly
during the evening hours, and adequate lighting is necessary to ensure safety,
accessibility, and equitable use of the amenity; and
WHEREAS, on April 23, 2025, the Mayor and City Commission adopted
Resolution No. 2025-33603, which approved the installation of temporary lighting at the
Polo Park basketball courts as a six-month pilot program commencing on November 2,
2025; and
WHEREAS, temporary lighting has been installed at the Polo Park basketball
courts to address immediate lighting needs and to evaluate extended hours of use; and
WHEREAS, the Nautilus Area Homeowners Association ("NAHA") previously
recommended the installation of temporary lighting at the Polo Park basketball courts and
now recommends the installation of permanent lighting within Polo Park; and
WHEREAS, permanent lighting infrastructure is necessary to provide a durable,
safe, and cost-effective long-term solution for the Polo Park basketball courts; and
WHEREAS, the installation of permanent lighting at the Polo Park basketball
courts is anticipated to cost approximately $315,000, and requires appropriate budgetary
planning and prioritization; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission desire that the following conditions
shall remain in effect at Polo Park in connection with the operation of lighting at the
basketball courts:
(1) the City shall continue to maintain and monitor the temporary lighting;
(2) the Park Rangers, or other City staff, shall manually turn the lights on before
sunset and turn them off at approximately 9 p.m. each day; and
(3) the Park Rangers are on a roving schedule for Polo Park, 7 days/week, morning
and evening times; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission also desire that funding for the design
and installation of permanent lighting at the Polo Park basketball courts be prioritized
during the FY 2027 budget process, and further desire that the City Administration
maintain the existing temporary lighting until permanent lighting is installed and
operational.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, hereby make the allocation
of funding for permanent lighting at the Polo Park basketball courts a budget priority
during the FY 2027 budget process; and further, direct the City Administration to maintain
the existing temporary lighting at Polo Park until such time as permanent lighting is
installed.
