MIAMI BEACH
OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
LTC # LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Honorable Mayor Steven Meiner and Members of the City Commission
FROM Eric Carpenter, City Manager f}c«,
DATE: March 11, 2026
SUBJECT: Sea Turtle Season Preparations
The City of Miami Beach is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of its natural
resources, including the protection of sea turtles that nest annually on our beaches. City
Ordinance No. 2024-4652 restricts artificial lighting during nesting season between April 1st and
October 31st (Ord. No. 2024-4652). Each year, the City refines its procedures to prepare for the
upcoming nesting season, and I am pleased to share this season's updates.
Celebrating Turtle Fest during Earth Month
The Environment and Sustainability Department is pleased to
announce that the fourth annual Turtle Fest will be held on
Saturday, April 25th at Altos del Mar Park from 3 to 6 pm.
This fun, family-friendly event invites the Miami Beach
community to celebrate sea turtle nesting season while raising
awareness about local efforts in sea turtle conservation and
environmental stewardship during Earth Month. The event will
again include activities such as a beach cleanup hosted by
Clean Miami Beach, educational games and informative
booths.

During the 2025 nesting season, the Environment and Sustainability and Code Compliance
Departments conducted over 70 lighting surveys along the entire beachfront. Code Compliance
issued 43 Violations and 35 Courtesy Notices. As a result of these actions, 42 beachfront
properties were brought into compliance specifically during the 2025 nesting season. Looking
ahead, additional lighting surveys will be conducted in the upcoming sea turtle nesting season to
increase compliance.
