HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2026-34197RESOLUTION NO. 4 2 6— 3 4 1 9% A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE FINANCE AND ECONOMIC RESILIENCY COMMITTEE, AT ITS FEBRUARY 20, 2026 MEETING, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO CLOSE OCEAN DRIVE TO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC DURING THE FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 GAMES IN MIAMI; AND, AS AMENDED BY THE CITY COMMISSION AT THE MARCH 18, 2026 MEETING, FURTHER DIRECTING THE ADMINISTRATION TO EXTEND THE DURATION OF THE CLOSURE BY COMMENCING THE OCEAN DRIVE CLOSURE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND 2026 AND MAINTAINING SUCH CLOSURE THROUGH THE CONCLUSION OF THE FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 GAMES IN MIAMI. WHEREAS, at the February 20, 2026 Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee ("FERC" or "Committee") meeting, during a discussion on item NB 11 - "Discuss Resolution Directing the Administration To Put Its Best Foot Forward And Use Best Efforts To Have Municipal And Private Projects In The Pipeline, Permitted And Completed, To The Extent Feasible, Ahead Of The 2026 World Cup, Including Issuance Of Permits For New Businesses", the Committee passed a motion directing the Administration to close Ocean Drive to vehicular traffic during the FIFA World Cup 2026 games in Miami; and WHEREAS, the closure of Ocean Drive to vehicular traffic during major special events in the City of Miami Beach ("City") has been previously accomplished via a permit from the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works ("DTPW"), the agency with purview and authority over street closures countywide, including within incorporated municipalities; and WHEREAS, during discussion on agenda item R7 X at the March 18, 2026 City Commission meeting, the City Commission adopted Resolution No. 2026-34197 and passed a motion amending said resolution directing the AdmiN$tration to extend the closure of Ocean Drive from Memorial Day Weekend 2026 through the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup 2026 games in Miami. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby accept the recommendation of the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee, at its February 20, 2026 meeting, directing the Administration to close Ocean Drive to vehicular traffic during the,FIFA World Cup 2026 Games in Miami; and, as amended by the City Commission at its March 16, 2026 meeting, further directing the Administration to extend the duration of the closure by commencing the Ocean Drive closure at the beginning of the Memorial Day Weekend 2026 and maintaining such closure through the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup 2026 games in Miami.
