Miami Beach First Generation College Scholarship Program Update
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (L TC) is to provide an update on the City of MiamiBeach's First-Generation Scholarship Program for residents attending Florida InternationalUniversity (FIU) during the 2025-2026 academic year. This program offers financial assistance to eligible residents, helping reduce economic barriers to higher education.
In August 2024, the Mayor and City Commission approved Resolution 2024-33018, authorizing upto $30,800 in City funding, along with $3,900 contributions from both the Miami Beach Police Athletic League and the Miami Beach Chamber Education Foundation.
For the 2025-2026 school year, 55 Miami Beach residents enrolled at FIU received a needbased scholarship averaging $2,105.45. The program was funded by $38,600 in combined contributions from City partners, supplemented by 2:1 matching funds from the FIU Foundation totaling $77,200, for a combined $115,800 in available scholarship support.
Since inception, the program has awarded nearly $442,000 to Miami Beach students with financial need. Recipients must be Miami Beach residents, FIU students, and eligible Pell Grant recipients.
