SUBJECT: Motions from the Miami Beach Commission for Women
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide you with the motions made at the Miami Beach
Commission for Women meeting held on May 5, 2026.
Motion #1 : The Miami Beach Commission for Women made a motion to co-designate Miami Beach city
streets in honor of women who made a significant and valuable impact in Miami Beach history and culture. The Commission for Women would like to submit the following 3 names for ceremonial street
co-naming consideration:

Ceremonial Street Name Candidates
Elizabeth Goodnow Cooper founded the Miami Beach Women's Club on December 15,1926,to
foster friendship and community among residents following the devastating 1926 hurricane.She
aimed to create an inclusive organization that provided practical,constructive work.They
organized a book drive that collected 899 books,creating the foundation for the Miami Beach
Public Library.The Miami Beach Woman's Club clubhouse was built on a site donated by Carl
G.Fisher in 1927 to support their civic contributions.
Judy Blume spent two years living in Miami Beach as the most important and formative of her
childhood.Her family moved there from New Jersey during the winters of 1946 and 1947 to help
her brother recover from a kidney infection in the warmer climate.She lived at 1330
Pennsylvania Avenue and attended Central Beach Elementary School,which is now known as
Fienberg Fisher K-8.Fans can still take a narrated "Sally J.Freedman Reality Tour"via WLRN
to walk through the real-life locations featured in her work.Judy Blume has received more than
90 literary awards over her career,ranging from children's choice honors to some of the highest
accolades inAmerican letters.'
Jo Ann Bass (1931-2026)was the third-generation matriarch and longtime manager of Joe's
Stone Crab in Miami Beach,granddaughter of founder Joe Weiss.She began working at the
restaurant at 13,helped run it for decades alongside her son Stephen Sawitz,and was
instrumental in turning the iconic restaurant into a high-grossing institution.
