Dear Mayor &Commissioners:
The Sunset Harbour Neighborhood Association {SHNA)voted 9-0 to OPPOSE any
traffic gates or roadway barriers restricting entry to North Bay Road commission
item 5-20-26 R&AF
Our opposition is based on several important concerns:
•Regardless of any self-serving traffic study,it is only logical that traffic
devices designed to restrict access to North Bay Road will increase congestion
and traffic volumes on Alton Road and surrounding streets.
•North Bay Road serves as a vital emergency connector within Miami Beach.
Fire Rescue,Police,and emergency response vehicles must have the ability to
bypass congestion or blockages on Alton Road during emergencies,accidents,
evacuations,or special events.
•Residents and property owners throughout Miami Beach already pay taxes
to maintain and access these public roads.Miami Beach was not designed to
operate as a gated HOA-style community with restricted neighborhood access
and guardhouse-type controls.
•Creating a separate Special Assessment District ("SAD")for roadway
closures or traffic gating would set a dangerous precedent for other
neighborhoods to seek similar restrictions,ultimately forcing additional traffic
onto major corridors such as Alton Road.
•Public streets should remain accessible to all residents,visitors,service
providers,and emergency personnel without selective restrictions that
negatively impact surrounding neighborhoods.
For these reasons,we respectfully urge the Mayor and Commission to VOTE
AGAINST any proposed traffic gates or access restrictions on North Bay Road
item R7 AF.
