Temporary Closure of Ocean Drive During Memorial Day Weekend and FIFA
World Cup Games
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (L TC) is to update the Mayor and City Commission ("City Commission") regarding City Commission Resolution No. 2026-34197, as amended and
adopted on March 18, 2026, directing the City Administration ("Administration") to close Ocean
Drive to vehicular traffic from 5 Street to 14 Place from Memorial Day Weekend through the FIFA World Cup games in Miami.
Based on recent discussions between the Administration and the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works ("DTPW"), the agency with county-wide jurisdictional authority and purview over street closures, DTPW advised that approval of a continuous closure of Ocean
Drive from 5 Street to 14 Place from Memorial Day Weekend through the end of the FIFA World
Cup games (i.e. from Friday, May 22, 2026 through Sunday, July 19, 2026) would be highly unlikely. Alternatively, DTPW advised that it would consider applications for closures of limited
durations as warranted, such as during game days and weekends. Based on DTPW's feedback,
multiple closures of Ocean Drive may be necessary during this high impact period.
At this time, the Administration has submitted a road closure application along with a Maintenance
of Traffic (MOT) plan to DTPW for the closure of Ocean Drive from 14 Street to 15 Street from
May 20-25, 2026 in connection with the Air & Sea Show activities and associated concert event.
The Administration will continue to coordinate with DTPW, the Ocean Drive Association (ODA),
and area stakeholders to secure approvals for the temporary closure of Ocean Drive during certain FIFA World Cup games and related events. Additional updates will be provided via L TC
as appropriate.
