SUBJECT: Art in Public Places Completion of Maintenance -Roy Lichtenstein,Mermaid (1979)
The purpose of this letter to the Mayor and Commission is to inform you that conservationand restoration work for the Roy Lichtenstein sculpture, Mermaid (1979), has been
completed by RLA Conservation of Art and Architecture. Located in the lawn area adjacent
to The Fillmore Miami Beach near the corner of 17 Street and Washington Avenue, the
sculpture is forty-seven (47) years old and was previously exhibiting corrosion, structuralissues, faded paint, and a deteriorating pool basin.
The approximately twelve (12) week project began March 27, 2026, as communicated viaL TC#077-2026. The project was completed June 17, 2026, and the following conservationtreatments were performed:
•Replacement of the lower metal beams;•Repairs and cleaning of the metal and concrete elements of the Mermaid; •Full repainting in an industrial paint
system color-matched to the original
colors; •Repairs and cleaning of the pool basin
and tiles; •Repainting of the pool basin and wall with color-matched pool paint; •Cleaning and application of a protective
wax coating to the bronze plaque.
The restoration project was completed on schedule and was led by the Tourism and
Culture Department, with the assistance of various City Departments, including Parks,
Facilities, Fleet and Beaches, Public Works, Marketing and Communications, and Parking.
