BRIDGE REHABILYrATION, REMOVAL OF FLYOVER, AND
IMPROVEMENTS TO 63RD STREET AND INDIAN CREEK DRIVE
Date: Ju .n~28,~004
For your information, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has scheduled a public
information workshop for subject project to take place at Nautilus Middle School Auditorium on
Wednesday, July 21,2004, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
After the demolition of the existing flyover, subject project will resurface and reconstruct Indian
Creek Drive from a point 350 feet south of W 63~d Street to just north of Abbott Avenue. The total
length of the project along Indian Creek Drive is 0.6 miles. The project also includes milling and
resurfacing of W 63rd Street, beginning just east of Allison Road and ending at the west end of the
drawbridge crossing Indian Creek. The project includes complete renovation of the W 63rd Street
Drawbridge. The reconstruction of W 63rd Street continues from east of the drawbridge to a point
just west of Collins Avenue. The distance from Allison Road to Collins Avenue is approximately
0.16 miles. The most notable feature of this reconstruction is the removal of the left turn flyover
(Eastbound to Northbound) and a total revamping of the signalized intersection ofW 63~d Street and
Indian Creek Drive.
The project includes new roadway lighting, new drainage structures, new signing and pavement
markings, landscaping, and an updating of all signalized intersections. The renovation of the bddge
will include new handrail, restoration and concrete repairs, new structural steel for the bascule leaf,
and more reliable electrical systems, control systems, and machinery systems.
In order to avoid impacting two consecutive toudst seasons and boat shows, the project is currently
planned to start construction in April 2006. Once construction begins, it is estimated that it will take
approximately 580 days to complete the work; however, the contractor will be given substantial
incentives to complete the work early and penalties for completing the work late. Maintenance of
traffic concepts are set up so as to maintain traffic on both W 634 Street and Indian Creek Drive at
all times. Marine traffic will not be affected except for short pedods of time, for which ample notice
and Coast Guard compliance will be required.
In response to the City Commission's suggestion, FDOT is looking for ways to provide a protected
left tum from Collin~ Avenue and 63r~ Street to south bound Indian Creek Drive.
