PROSTITUTION I J RGLARY UPDATE
Date: July 21, 2004
Subject:
This Letter to the City Commission is to provide an update on the Police Department's on-
going efforts to combat prostitution and to advise of the arrest of a prolific burglary suspect
which had been targeting the North District.
Prostitution details are conducted on a regular basis using undercover detectives from the
Strategic Investigations Unit, detectives from the Crime Suppression Team, and uniform
Patrol Officers. The most recent major operation was on Friday July 2nd from 10:00 p.m. to
7:00 a.m. in the area of 10th - 23rd Street, Ocean Drive to Washington Avenue. During this
detail there were 21 arrests made on charges including violation of probation (mapping
program) and offering to commit prostitution, as well as 13 other arrests on other
misdemeanor charges. It should be noted that many of the prostitutes have been arrested
numerous times. Included in this group was a prostitute with 23 prior prostitution arrests.
Plans for future prostitution details include attempting to target and arrest the pimps
operating behind the scenes.
On July 17th through the combined efforts of the Crime Suppression Team and uniform
patrol officers from the North District, a burglary suspect was arrested at 2180 Bay Drive.
Although the investigation is still on-going, this suspect is believed to be responsible for as
many as 13 burglaries in the North District.
These types of proactive policing efforts will continue with the Crime Suppression Team
being utilized to target emerging crime trends.
