ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION: The Commission should approve the extension of the Miami Beach Development Corporation (MBDC) Agreement for administering the Off-Duty Police Program on Washington Avenue. BACKGROUND: At the City Commission meeting of January 8, 1997, the City Commission approved a budget amendment which enabled the City to take responsibility for services previously performed by the Districts. Included in this budget amendment was the allocation of$169,344 for 40 weeks of private off-duty security (24 officers per week) to be administered by MBDC. That contract will expire at the end of this fiscal year, September 30, 1997. The Administration is working closely with the Police Department to develop a new plan for addressing Washington Avenue security. The new program will be implemented within the next 30- 60 days. In the interim, off-duty security should continue uninterrupted. Extending MBDC's contract will accomplish this. An allocation of $45,000 for 60 days will cover the anticipated salary costs for a maximum of two months. CONCLUSION: The proposed budget amendment (in the amount of$45,000 for a 60-day period oftime) is necessary to provide uninterrupted off duty security for Washington Avenue. The City Commission should approve the amendment. JGP:~:PP f:\cmgr\$all\com-mem.97\mbdc.con 2t6 AGENDA ITEM C 1 I DATE~7
