Parks & Recreation Department Update
The Parks & Recreation Department has scored a handful of new successes and proudly reports
victories for our traveling baseball, ice hockey, swimming and cheerleading teams.
For the first time since 1990, the 13 and under Traveling Baseball Team has become the South
Florida champs in their age group. And they achieved the feat with an impressive victory. The team
beat Pembroke Shores 15-5 Saturday, December 11, 2004 to win its first championship for the
current team.
The Free Family Funday returned to the Scott Rakow Youth Center Sunday, December 4, 2004.
The event drew 85 adults and children for free activities that included basketball, bowling, ice
skating, billiards, swimming and ceramics.
Four new Traveling Soccer Teams have been created for boys and girls aged 5 -12. A total of 44
players are participating. They have been playing against other teams from throughout Miami-Dade
County.
Our new Miami Beach Hockey Team, playing in competition for only the second time, won an
impressive victory over the much more experienced Sunrise team December 5, 2004 at the Sunrise
Skating Center. Miami Beach won 3-2 after having lost to the Sunrise team 5-2 three weeks earlier
in our team's first official game. More than 30 children and parents celebrated and cheered after the
victory!
The Miami Beach Seahawks Swim Team placed second in the Junior Orange Bowl Swimming
Championships held at the Miami Springs Aquatic Center on November 27,2004. About 50 boys
and girls, aged 7 -15, participate in the after school program at the Scott Rakow Youth Center.
The Miami Beach X-Treme and the Miami Beach Bolts cheerleading teams are headed to the
national cheerleading competition after winning in their respective divisions during the Cheerleaders
of America Beach Blast at the Miami Beach Convention Center Saturday, December 11, 2004.
