A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA SETTING A DATE AND
TIME FOR A PUBLIC HEARING TO
CONSIDER RENAMING OCEAN PARK AS
"MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGI.AS PARK".
WHEREAS, Marjory Stoneman Douglas has served the people of her
community, the State of Florida, the United States by alerting the
nation to the danger threatening the delicate eco-system of the
Florida Everglades in her book, "The Everglades: River of Grass"i
and
WHEREAS, in November of 1993 President Clinton presented
Marjory Stoneman Douglas with the Medal of Freedom and referred to
her as the "Grandmother of the Everglades"i and
WHEREAS, Marjory Stoneman Douglas has also actively served and
supported numerous civic causes such as public libraries, the
improvement of living conditions for blacks in Coconut Grove,
Fairchild Gardens and the Evergladesi and
WHEREAS, the South pointe Advisory Board has recommended
renaming Ocean Beach Park as "Marjory Stoneman Douglas Parki and
WHEREAS, on May 15, 1995 the Community Affairs Committee
recommended the renaming; and

WHEREAS, pursuant to Miami Beach City Code Section 39-27 the
Mayor and City Commission must now hold a public hearing to
consider the renaming,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that a public
hearing to consider renaming Ocean Park as "Marj ory Stoneman
Douglas Park" is hereby called to be held before the Mayor and City
Commission in their Chambers on the Third Floor of City Hall, 1700
Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, Florida on July 12
, 1995,
beginning at 4:50p,m" and the City Clerk is hereby authorized and
directed to publish appropriate Public Notice of the said Public
Hearing in a newspaper of general circulation in the City of Miami
Beach, at which time and place all interested parties will be
heard,
PASSED and ADOPTED this 21st
June

SUBJECT:
ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION:
The Administration recommends the Mayor and City Commission approve
the attached Resolution authorizing the Mayor and City Commission
to schedule a date and time for a Public Hearing to consider the
renaming Ocean Park as "Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park,"
BACKGROUND:
On June 7, 1995, the City of Miami Beach adopted an Ordinance
Amendment to exempt persons over 100 years of age from the existing
City Code 39-26, prohibiting the naming of a streets, sidewalks
and/or public facilities after a living person,
In recognition of the deeds and accomplishments of Marjory Stoneman
Douglas' contributions to the betterment of our community, in her
involvement of numerous civic and environmental causes, the
Community Affairs Committee, on May 15, 1995, recommended to the
full City Commission that a Public Hearing be scheduled to consider
the renaming of Ocean Park as "Marjory Stonemen Douglas Park,"
CONCLUSION:
The City Administration recommends a Public Hearing be scheduled at
which time and place all interested parties will be heard,
