A RESOLUTION F' HE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING AND SUPPORTING THE
NOMINATION OF LINCOLN ROAD, AND ITS REVITALIZATION, FOR ENTRY
IN THE GREAT AMERICAN MAIN STREET AWARDS COMPETITION.
ADMINISTRA TION RECOMMENDATION
Adopt the Resolution
BACKGROUND
The National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Center and Edward Jones, Inc. have requested
nominations for the Great American Main Street Awards for 1998. The program recognizes exceptional
accomplishments in revitalizing America's historic and neighborhood commercial districts. The competition
is open to all communities in the United States. Citizens of all towns and cities in the U.S. and its territories
are eligible to submit an entry. Communities that have completed commercial district revitalization efforts
are invited to nominate downtown revitalization achievements for this high-profile national award. A cash
award of $5,000 will be given to each community, in addition to being announced at the May 1998 A wards
ceremony. Five communities will be selected. Nominations are due November 1, 1997.
ANALYSIS
The City would like to recognize Lincoln Road as an example worthy of nomination to the A ward program.
The City's recent success in the revitalization of Lincoln Road has reversed a severe economic and physical
deterioration trend on the Road that had been evolving since the mid 1960's. The repair, restoration, and
renovation of numerous significant commercial structures, dating from the City's first development boom
period in the 1920's, as well as the second boom era of the 1930's, and the successful adaptive re-use of
historic properties on the Road, have made Lincoln Road a shining example of downtown revitalization
efforts. This has been an extraordinary joint effort of the City, merchants on the Road, and the preservation
community. Today, Lincoln Road, with its new landscaping and paving, restoration of Morris Lapidus
structures and pedestrian mall concept, and revitalization of fine commercial facades, has become the
wonderful living room of Miami Beach.
CONCLUSION
The Administration recommends the adoption of the attached Resolution authorizing and supporting the
nomination of Lincoln Road, and its revitalization, for entry in the Great American Main Street Awards
competition.
