A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA,
DESIGNATING VICE-MAYOR MARTIN SHAPIRO AS
LIAISON FOR THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH TO INITIATE
DISCUSSIONS WITH THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION AND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION WITH REGARD TO THE POSSIBLE
ACQUISITION OF THE MIRABELLA SITE AND ADJACENT
PROPERTIES BY SUCH AGENCIES FOR THE PURPOSE OF
STRAIGHTENING COLLINS AVENUE, MITIGATING THE
TRAFFIC FLOW, AND REMOVING A DANGEROUS
TRAFFIC CONDITION.
WHEREAS, Collins Avenue is a State road and is also designated as U.S. Highway AlA
and is under the jurisdiction of both the State and U.S. Departments of Transportation; and
WHEREAS, the property located at 6000 Collins Avenue (the "Mirabella site") and adjacent
properties is located in an area of dense development and in a configuration which has created a
dangerous curve in the roadway; and
WHEREAS, from a traffic flow perspective, if the Mirabella site were to be acquired by the
State or U.S. Department of Transportation, the traffic congestion problems in that area would be
alleviated as well as providing increased safety for pedestrians and motor vehicles; and
WHEREAS, it is necessary for the health, safety, and welfare of the public that such traffic
condition be alleviated and that State and Federal authorities should be contacted and urged to
participate in the solution; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission have found and determined that it should
explore the possibility of the Florida and U.S. Departments of Transportation acquiring the Mirabella
site, and possibly adjoining properties, in order to straighten Collins Avenue in this area and have
appointed Vice-Mayor Martin Shapiro as the liaison to the Florida and U.S. Departments of
Transportation to discuss such prospect; and
WHEREAS, Congressman E. Clay Shaw has expressed his interest and concern with the
problems of this City as above set forth and his willingness to assist as he may be able.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that Vice-Mayor Martin
Shapiro is hereby authorized as the liaison of the City to enter into discussions with the Florida and
U.S. Departments of Transportation and Congressman E. Clay Shaw with regard to the prospect of
such Agencies acquiring the property located at the Mirabella site and on adjacent properties in order
to solve the dangerous traffic conditions which currently exist.
