Re: Allison Island
Dear Neisen:
In an effort to showcase the beautification program currently under way on our Island, the homeowners
have requested that we seek approval from the Commission to change the name of Allison Road to
"Allison Island." Craig Robins, who is proposing a "low rise" development on the St. Francis site,
concurs with this request. We believe, that this new designation will provide an enhanced identity to
our street and will serve to compliment our Island's beautification project. The entrance feature which
is planned for both sides of Allison Island, are deserving of such a designation.
Please let me know when the renaming of our street may be heard before the Commission, and as to
what additional steps may be necessary.
Thank you for your continued support in this matter.
Very truly yours,
HOMEOWNERS' ASSOCIATION OF
ALLISON, INC.

COMMISSION MEMORANDUM NO.1 ~ S-'14
TO:
Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and
Members of the City mmission
DATE: October 20, 1999
SUBJECT:
A RESOLD I OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF IAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING THE RENAMING OF
ALLISON ROAD TO ALLISON ISLAND DRIVE.
FROM:
Sergio Rodriguez
City Manager
ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION
Adopt the Resolution.
BACKGROUND
On July 21,1999, the Mayor and City Commission referred a request to the Community Affairs
Committee regarding the renaming of Allison Road to Allison Island. Mr. Jonathan Beloff,
President ofthe Homeowners' Association of Allison, Inc., submitted the request (Attachment 1).
The Community Affairs Committee carefully reviewed the request at its meeting of September 29,
1999. Allison Road is a city-owned roadway on Allison Island (Attachment 2). It was originally
called WaterviewPrado and was renamed Allison Road by Ordinance No. 375 on March 20, 1935
(Attachment 3). The name Allison Road has remained to date.
The original request from the Homeowners was to change the name to Allison Island, however, a
review of the current street names for islands on Miami Beach indicates that typically, primary
roadways are named Drives (Attachment 4). As such, the Committee recommended the name of
Allison Island Drive which will conform to established naming structures for islands in Miami
Beach. Both Mr. Jonathan Beloff(President), and Mr. Joel Meyerson (Member) ofthe Homeowners
of Allison Island, Inc. approved the name Allison Island Drive on behalf of the Association.
The Community Affairs Committee unanimously approved the name change from Allison Road to
Allison Island Drive.
In accordance with Section 82-504 of the City Code, the Mayor and City Commission shall hold a
public hearing to obtain public input regarding the renaming of any street located on Miami Beach.
Today's public hearing renaming Allison Road was set at the October 6, 1999 City Commission
meeting.

Renaming Allison Road
Page 2
ANALYSIS
Pursuant to Section 82-503 of the City Code, whenever there is a proposal to rename an existing
public facility or street within or owned by the City, the renaming shall first be considered and
reviewed by the Community Affairs Committee. The Committee shall then transmit a written
recommendation to the City Commission regarding the proposal and a public hearing shall be held.
If approved by the City Commission, the name of Allison Island Drive shall be effective ten days
after the adoption of the attached resolution.
Pursuant to Section 82-504 of the City Code, referendum requirements shall only apply to renaming
main streets on Miami Beach. Allison Road is not considered to bc a main street, and, therefore
referendum requirements do not apply. (The City Code defines main streets as the following:
MacArthur Causeway-Fifth Street; Venetian Causeway; Dade Boulevard; 41st Street; 71st Street;
Normandy Drive; Collins Avenue; Washington Avenue; Indian Creek Drive; Pine Tree Drive; Alton
Road; Lincoln Road; and Ocean Drive.)
Similarly, the sunsetting provisions of this section of the City Code are not applicable to this
proposal because the street will not be renamed after a person.
If this name change is approved, the Administration will advise Miami-Dade County of the new
name. The County is then responsible for changing the road signs and advising all relevant parties.
The County is also responsible for all signage costs associated with the renaming.
CONCLUSION
It is recommended that the Mayor and City Commission adopt this resolution approving the
renaming of Allison Road to Allison Island Drive.
