OFFICE OF THE MAYOR & COMMISSION
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH
TO: SERGIO RODRIGUEZ
CTIY MANAGER
FROM: NEISEN KASDIN m ~
MAYOR
SUBJECT: ALTON ROAD TRAFFIC MITIGATION
LETTERFROMJ~SCHLOBOr.uM
DATE: OCTOBER 12, 1999
Attached is a letter from Mr. Jim Schlobohm, President of the Alton Road Homeowners
Association, regarding various traffic mitigation initiatives. Please review this letter and
respond to my office in writing as to the Administration's plan to address these points. In
particular, I would like to see the City move forward as soon as possible on the items that
can be accomplished in the more immediate future:
1. Temporary traffic calming initiatives on Alton Road such as bump outs,
widened parking areas and lane width reductions, additional turning lanes, and
additional shade trees
These items were discussed on numerous occasions. I suggest the City
implement a combination of measures along a strip of Alton Road to analyze
the feasibility of these options. This can be accomplished at a minimal cost.
2. Increase of STEP's presence along Alton Road while the LaGorce/Pinetree
traffic calming measures are implemented and continuing efforts once they are
complete
If you need additional information, please feel free to contact Jim directly. I am
confident that the Homeowners Association will be willing to work with the City to
accomplish these measures.

Re: Update on Aqua end the Bath Projects
Deer Mayor Kasdin.
As you may know. Craig Robbins has been working with our association to gain support
for his project. During the course of our COnversations it became clear that we need the
support of your office and of the commissioners to put the necessary changes in place to
make both Aqua and the Bath Club projects palatable to our board and hopefully our
membership.
J
tt is our board's feeling that responsible and sensible development will need to go hand
in hand with City action. In particular we are hoping that you will lead the commission to
' commit to the following:
· Dollars and action for tempol'ary traffic calming on Alton including lane width
reductions (restrlping), widened parking areas (restriplng), bump outs and additional
south bound left turn lanes (minQr curb work). This temporary work. could be
petformod in ortler to study the effectiveness of the devit.as.
· A commercial truck route established running south to north to bypass the Alton
Roadl LaGo~ Pinetree residential area. Currently the Traffic Calming
Subcommittee (TeS) is studying the 'Viability of this with Joseph Johnsen.
· Action on the 63rd street f1yover ~At Grade Solution" with modifications as proposed
by the TeS including signalized South! West bound lanes at Indian Creek/63rd
Street, Two Southbound only lanes, one Souttl/West lane. one West only lane.
Action for 43fd Street Intersection Improvements.
· Confirmation from you and the commissioners that major traffic calming On all of
Alton from 20111 to 83m will be the neld state road traffic-c.alming project undertaken.
J · After thtil installation of the schedulel;t LaGorce / Pinetree traffic calming measures,
increased Police presence on Alton during early morning and aftemoonllate evening
as requested by our association as part of the ~mpromjse to enable laGorce I
Pinetree to proceed with our support.
We are hopeful that you will assist us if') our desire to find creative solutions balancing
the needs of residen1s with the need of continuing to revitalize our C~y_
As always, if you wish to reach me to discuss there or other issues, please feel free to
call ~t 305-674-1820 (office). or 305-970-~283 ( cell) or 305-861-9139 ( home)
Thmking you ~
