The purpose of this LTC is to provide you with an update describing some of~e
areas the Administration has recently been focusing on:
FY 2005/06 Budget - I continue to meet with representatives from all City
Departments to discuss and prepare for the FY 2005/06 budget particularly
focusing on the development of Departmental work plans. Discussions with all
Departments on their work plans and proposed budgets will continue throughout
the next several weeks. A follow-up budget briefing with the entire City
Commission is being scheduled for early June.
Major Events Plan (MEP) - Staff continues to prepare for several major events
that will be taking place including the Spring Fest 2005 taking place this weekend
in Miami but with heavy overflow into Miami Beach and the Memorial Day holiday
weekend during the last week of May. Staff met with representatives from Miami
Dade County on April 29, including the Police. Fire, Community Relations and
Sanitation departments from the County, to continue to plan and allocate shared
resources for the busy holiday weekend.
Miami Beach Community Survey - The Hay Group continues to analyze the
data collected through the resident survey. Representatives from the Hay Group
will participate in the Commission Retreat on May 20 to review the data and
provide a comprehensive overview of the survey results.
Public Safety - The Fire Department's annual awards and recognition program
took place on April 29 in the Commission Chambers recognizing all rank
promotions from the past year as well as presenting various other awards. The
Police Department will begin implementing a modified Alpha/Bravo shift
beginning on April 29 to ensure a sufficient police response during the Spring
Fest 2005 weekend activities.
Channel 20 - Staff from my office and the City Clerk's office continue to meet to
discuss expanding the types of programming offered on Channel 20 as well as
the more frequent production of relevant Public Service Announcements (PSAs).
Emergency I Hurricane Preparedness - Staff continues to update the City's
emergency / hurricane preparedness plans with several follow-up meetings
scheduled with relevant staff throughout the nest several weeks. Two hurricane
fairs are planned to provide residents with information that will help them
prepare, the one in South Beach is scheduled for June 5 on Lincoln Road and
the one in North Beach is scheduled for June 11 on Normandy Circle.
Labor Relations - Staff from the Office of Labor Relations has been preparing
for the next set of Impasse hearings scheduled for next week from May 2-4.
Once the hearings are complete, the Special Magistrate will make a
recommendation for resolution. If either side rejects the recommendation, the
final decision is then routed to the City Commission.
Growth Management - Staff and I met one on one with Commissioners Bower,
Cruz, Gross, and Smith to discuss strategies and recommendations for dealing
with growth management issues on Miami Beach, particularly as they may relate
to the proposed legislation the Florida State Legislature is dealing with. Meetings
are scheduled next week with Mayor Dermer, Vice Mayor Garcia and
Commissioner Steinberg to discuss these strategies.
Organizational Development - Training on our new enhanced customer service
standards continue to take place with staff from throughout the City. The goal of
the training is to ensure that all employees receive the proper training and
resources to be able to deliver outstanding customer service.
Parks and Recreation - The summer edition of the Recreation Review is being
mailed to all residents in the City with a listing of all summer programs and
camps. This edition pays tribute to the City's 90 h birthday. The second "Movie
in the Park" has been scheduled for Saturday, May 21 at Flamingo Park
beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Parks and Recreation Department has distributed
over 1,000 flyers throughout all city parks regarding the Pooper Scooper
Ordinance.
Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day - Nearly 150 children participated
in this years event that exposed children between the ages of 7 - 12 to many of
the services provided by the City of Miami Beach. Most City Departments
participated in one way or another with most hosting a workshop that provided
the children with information to help them understand the many areas within a
municipality necessary to provide goods and services.
