Gonzalez ,~ City Manager (j- v Subject: World Class Fun & Games Miami Beach Adult Hockey Team Beats Russia, Heads for Prague: World Team Miami Beach took an impressive 2nd Place in the Airline International Hockey Cup Tournament played at the Glacier Ice Arena in Pompano Beach April 27 - 29,2005. The Miami Beach team beat Team Russia 6 -1, ending Russia's 3-year winning streak and 3-year reign as Tournament Champs. As a result of the win, World Team Miami Beach will be competing in Prague on November 7 -14,2005. The adult hockey team was organized by Scott Rakow Youth Center Ice Rink Manager Tony Scallo and it practices at the Miami Beach facility. From: "Xtreme" Takes National Title: The Miami Beach Xtreme cheerleading team lived up to its name by winning its division title and posting the highest overall score at the Six Flags Over Texas CheerPower national cheerleading competition April 29-30, 2005. The 19 girls and 3 boys who make up the Xtreme took the 12th grade and under Division title with the best score of the 40 teams from all across America. The kids earned their way to the nationals by raising $14,000 for the trip. Playing On Pro Turf: Members of the Miami Beach "Sharks" and the Weston "Giants" baseball teams made memories that will last a lifetime in April when they played at Dolphin Stadium. The April 16, 2005 practice game on the home field of the Florida Marlins and the Miami Dolphins was arranged by "The Giants" coach and team sponsor Rene Prats through his business relationships with both pro teams. Special Olympics: City of Miami Beach Special Olympics Athletes took two Gold medals in the 2005 Summer Games held at the University of South Florida in Tampa, April 29-May 1,2005. Clarice Geller won a Gold Medal in Tennis and Donald Sellick won a Gold in Soccer. Robert Trio placed fifth in Tennis. These three athletes advanced to the State Games based on their performance at the Special Olympics Local Games held April 2, 2005 at Miami-Dade College South Campus. After School Spring Luau: The 2nd through 4th graders enrolled in the after school programs at the Playgrounds, PAL and North Shore Park & Youth Center danced the night away at the Spring Luau at the 21 st Street Recreation Center May 6, 2005. Participants tried their luck in a limbo contest, enjoyed dance games, took pictures at the photo stop, and enjoyed refreshments.
