SUBJECT: RESOLUTION D C ARING NOVEMBER, 1997 AS "NATIONAL
EPILEPSY A W NESS MONTH" IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH.
ADMINISTRATIVE RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the resolution.
BACKGROUND:
This request is made by Mr. Jerry Pizza, Chairman of the Committee for Epilepsy
Awareness. Epilepsy, also known as a Seizure Disorder, has afflicted mankind since the
dawn of our species. Epilepsy can be caused by injury to the brain, lack of oxygen at birth,
brain tumor, infection, and brain hemorrhage. In sixty percent of the cases, the cause is
unknown, and Epilepsy can affect anyone, at any age and at any time. More than two million
Americans are afflicted with some type of Epilepsy. Of this number, 150,000 are Florida
residents. This'disorder has contributed to age.old myths, superstitions, and prejudices. Due
to lack of education and misinformation, people with Epilepsy have been discriminated
against in all walks of life. People who have Epilepsy make reliable and conscientious
workers. It is our goal to educate people as to what Epilepsy is and what Epilepsy is not.
CONCLUSION:
Epilepsy should not be a barrier to success. Those with Epilepsy should have the
opportunities afforded by a supportive environment and employers who are willing to give
them a chance to be accepted as productive citizens. 'Therefore, it is recommended that the
month of November, 1997 be declared as "National Epilepsy Awareness Month".
