The proposed schedule follows in date order by Miami Beach venue. Colony Theater . JUNE 21, 2006, KO-THI DANCE COMPANY (Milwaukee) Originally on the roster for the 2005 Festival, the group was postponed due to financial reasons. We remain committed to presenting the company in 2006. Pronounced Ko- THEE, Ko- Thi Dance Company is widely known for its authentic and progressive interpretations of the dance and music rooted in African, African-American and Caribbean cultures. The troupe is well known for their blazing energy, explosive athleticism and impressive ensemble discipline. More information about Ko-Thi is available at www.ko-thLoro. . JUNE 24,2006, CANdoCO (London, England) This company is under consideration as the featured company for danceAble, a program within the Festival focusing on dance as a vital art form and means of physical expression for people with disabilities. Co-produced with Tigertail Productions, danceAble's goals are to provide access to high-quality dance and artistic movement education for people with disabilities, provide a forum for people with disabilities to interact with artists of excellence with and without disabilities, and to dispel conventional myths and open minds to the possibilities of who can create and perform dance. Information about CandoCo is available at www.candoco.co.uk. (NOTE: This company has not yet responded to an e-mail inquiry about availability and interest in the Festival.) . JUNE 28, 2006, KEIGWIN + COMPANY (New York) Choreographer and artistic director Larry Keigwin is one of the new rising stars in the New York contemporary dance scene. Using an incredible sense of wit, his work is an attempt to both tease and investigate identity in the context of contemporary pop culture. Although story drives the direction of his dances, the movement used is more than literal by being infused with theatrical nuance and the inherent abstraction of metaphor. Before assembling his two year old company, Larry performed with many dance companies and choreographed and danced for Broadway, Off-Broadway and burlesque showcases. The cumulative effect of these varied influences helped him create a movement style that is at once dynamic and subtle. More information, and streaming video of the company, is available at www.larrvkeiowin.com. . JUNE 30, 2006, SESE MILLER COMPANY (New York/Columbus) Landing/Place is choreographer and artistic director Bebe Miller's most recent work. With dance for the camera, interactive digital media and live performance, Landing/Place explores sensory, spatial and cultural dislocation, and the yearning toward order in the apprehension of difference. More information is available at www.bebemillercomoanV.ora. Ticket prices for Colony Theater events will be $20 general admission, $16 student/senior and $14 for FDA members and groups. \.0 Byron Carlyle Theater . . JUNE 24, 2006, NUGENT + MATTESON DANCE (New York) Deemed 'a duet team to watch out for' by The Dance Insider, an on-line dance publication, Jennifer Nugent and Paul Matteson are two more rising luminaries in the New York dance scene. Currently dancers with David Dorfman Dance, they also create and perform their own choreography under the auspices of their own company. Their first performance in 2004 at New York's Symphony Space sold out each evening and received high praise from the media. Ms. Nugent is a former Miami dancer and Festival director Tom Thielen has followed the careers of the pair closely since 2000, when the couple appeared with Dorfman's company during that year's Festival. More information is available at www.nmdance.ora. . JUNE 29, 2006, MARLIES YEARBY'S MOVIN' SPIRITS DANCE THEATER (New York) Combining dance, spoken word, song, video and recorded interviews, Marlies Yearby's newest work, (Woom'en), investigates the shifting identities of women as redefined by age and experience. The inspiration for (Woom'en), which incorporates people from the local community in the performance, first began in workshops Ms. Yearby taught at the 1999 Florida Dance Festival. The work, which has been in development for two years, is a co- commission project by Florida Dance Association and 651 Arts in Brooklyn, New York. Ms. Yearby is most widely known as the Tony Award-nominated choreographer for the Broadway show 'Rent'. Ticket prices for Byron Carlyle Theater events will be $18 general admission, $14 student/senior and $12 for FDA members and groups. The Festival targets a broad general audience of all ages for its programs. Survey results from 2004 found that Festival audiences were primarily female (2/3 female, 1/3 male) with the largest age group (650/0) between 26-70. Nearly 60% were Caucasian, non-Hispanic, 31% Hispanic and the remainder African-American, Asian or multi-ethnic. Also, 30%) of survey respondents traveled from outside Miami-Dade County to attend performances, a positive indicator that the Festival is contributing to the City's cultural tourism efforts. Proiect description as revised (if applicable) based upon the City Commission approved award: Due to schedule changes for some companies and reduced funding from other sources, we have reduced the number of performances for the 2006 Florida Dance Festival.
