Biscayne House of Refuge Tuesday, November 29, 2005, 10:30 a,m., 72nd Street &-rj
Collins Avenue. Constructed in 1876, the Biscayne House was one of five United States
Life Saving Service stations along Florida's east coast. Its crews scoured the shore line
after fierce Atlantic Ocean storms to rescue stranded mariners.
In 1915, as Miami Beach became an incorporated city, the Life Saving Service became
the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard manned the station until it was destroyed by the
great hurricane of 1926,
In 1941, the property was conveyed to the City of Miami Beach for use as a public park.
In exchange, the Coast Guard received land along what is today's MacArthur Causeway
to establish its Miami-area base.
