RESOLUTION NO. 98-22642
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE GRANT
AND APPROPRIATION OF $67,000.00 FROM THE EIGHTH YEAR FUNDING
OF THE HIGH INTENSITY DRUG TRAFFICKING AREA PROGRAM (HITDA)
GRANT FUNDS.
WHEREAS, the Miami Beach Police Department is desirous of increasing law
enforcement activities so as to interdict drug trafficking and combat gang activity; and
WHEREAS, such increase in law enforcement activities is expected to result in
reduced street and property crime; and
WHEREAS, the Federal Government, through its High Intensity Drug Trafficking
Area Program (HIDTA), has made available funds for such activities for eighth year
funding; and
WHEREAS, the Miami Beach Police Department has been awarded $67,000.00 in
HIDTA grant funds.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby approve the appropriation and expenditure of $67,000.00 in High
Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program (HIDTA) Grant Funds.

ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION
Approve the Resolution.
BACKGROUND
The Miami Beach Police Department has applied to the Federal Government for its eighth
year of funding for the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program (HIDTA). The grant
funds will be awarded for the period of February 1, 1998 to January 31, 1999. These funds
are made available as part of a Federal/State/County and Municipal Law Enforcement
Agency Program to reduce violent street and property crimes. The mission of the program
will be to interdict drug flow with the combined efforts of the U.S. Marshals, Immigration
and Naturalization Service, Secret Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and
U.S. Customs. Additionally, the City of Miami Beach plans to target armed gang offenders
and federal fugitives.
The Police Department will continue to use the grant funds to pay for office rental,
vehicles and telephones for the Strategic Investigations Unit of the Police Department to
cont~ue its mission of combating illegal narcotics activity within the City of Miami Beach.
