LETTER TO COMMISSION
January 19, 2000
TO: Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and
Members of the City Commission
FROM: Lawrence Levy~
City Manager
SUBJECT: PART 1 CRIME COMPARISON 1996 - 1999
This Letter to Commission is to advise the Mayor and City Commission of the continued reduction
in Part 1 Crimes between the years 1998 and 1999. This is the fourth year in a row where the City
has experienced a reduction in the number of reported crimes to the Police Department.
Attached, you will find two charts showing the decreases in crime. Overall, crime has decreased
13.3% since 1996.
The City has a permanent resident population of approximately 94,000 residents. In addition to our
full time residents, the City hosts more than 35% of the ten million tourists who visit the Greater
Miami area. South Beach is the tourist destination of the Greater Miami Area. Generally speaking,
more people means more crime. However, in our case, the exact opposite has occurred.
The City and its citizens should feel proud and secure knowing that the Police Department has done
an outstanding job, in the face of increasing demands. With the increased international focus on
Miami Beach, especially on South Beach, the City continues to draw tourists, new businesses and
permanent residents alike. This is a remarkable accomplishment and one that deserves appreciation
and reco!~tion.
