Subject: 2000 MIAMI INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW
In 2000 the Miami International Boat Show (Boat Show) will have been in existence for 59 years.
This show has been held in Miami Beach for over 29 years. It is one of the top ten trade shows and
the largest boat show in the United States. Because of certain factors, the show presents many
unique challenges to the community, SMG, and City staff. These factors include 144,129 visitors,
a 115% increase in vehicle traffic entering the city on one day of the show, as well as the constraints
of staging an event this size in the middle of a residential area. Last year's Boat Show had an
economic impact on the City's business community of over $12 million. These increased revenues
are essential to our City's continued financial health.
In an effort to continue perfecting the performance of SMG and the City in the planning and
deliverance of the 2000 show, a meeting was held with City staff, SMG and NMMA Boat Show
representatives, at the conclusion of the 1999 Miami International Boat Show to critique the show.
The following is a summary of the plan for the 2000 Boat Show:
1. Dates and hours of 2000 Miami International Boat Show.
February 11-16.2000: Staging-in.
Hours: 7:00 a.m. - to approximately 7:00 p.m.
February 17-22.2000:
Hours: 10:00 a.m. -
10:00 a.m. -
12:00 p.m. -
Open to Public.
6:00 p.m. (February 17)
9:00 p.m. (February 18-21)
7:00 p.m. (February 22)
February 23-25. 2000:
Hours: 7:00 a.m. -
Staging-out.
to approximately 7:00 p.m.
1
2. Staging.
The staging of boats will begin February 10, 2000. Large boats are typically transported
from West Avenue and 6th Street, after being hauled out of the water. The staging-in will
be conducted from February 11 to February 16,2000 and the staging-out will be conducted
from February 23 to February 25, 2000.
The west side of the 17th Street lot will be used to stage boats and trailers waiting to proceed
to the north or south docks of the Convention Center. This location has been used in the last
three years for the staging and proved to be very successful. It eliminated the use of the lot
on Dade Boulevard between Meridian Avenue and Prairie Avenue. It also eliminated the
inconvenience to the residents on those avenues and the congestion of traffic, due to the
lining up of boats, on Dade Boulevard.
The Parking Department will notify the Lincoln Road merchants and patrons of available
parking in the 17th Street garage and on the east side of the 17th Street lot no later than
Tuesday, February 1, 2000.
3. Trailer Storage.
The lots on Indian Creek Drive and 27th Street will be utilized for trailer storage. Use of the
lot will start Thursday morning, February 17, 2000 and the lot will be cleared by Friday
afternoon, February 25, 2000. Daily parking for exhibitor trailers at a charge of $15.00 per
day is available in the public parking lot behind the Jackie Gleason Theater ofthe Performing
Arts from February 14 through 16,2000.
4. Parking.
Exhibitor parking will be provided during the Boat Show dates of February 17 through
February 22, 2000 at Miami Beach Senior High Football Field.
The Parking Department will be providing a map reflecting all of the self parking and shuttle
parking areas available within the city. This information will be given to those who cannot
find parking when they arrive at the Miami Beach parking facilities. The maps will also be
made available to the hotels and at the gasoline service stations located on 41 st Street, Dade
Boulevard, 71 st Street, and 5th Street where many visitors stop to ask for directions.
Parking will be made available for Holocaust Memorial employees on Meridian A venue and
20th Street adjacent to the vacant lot. City of Miami Beach employee parking will remain
at the lot west of City Hall. The Lincoln Road business owners and employees will have the
use of the 17th Street garage and surface lots and the Lincoln Lane surface lots on a first-
come-first-serve basis_
2
5. Hotel Shuttle.
Hotels along Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive will be provided with maps and information
on parking and encouragement to use the Boat Show shuttle service for their guests. Miami
Beach Tourist Hot-Line cards will also be provided to the hotels for distribution to their
guests. Hot-Line cards advise tourists that if they need assistance, the City will provide it to
them 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
Notification to hotel guests of parking, shuttle information, and Hot-Line cards will be
provided the week of Tuesday, February 1,2000.
6. Valet Parking.
Valet parking will be available from the Jackie Gleason Theater driveway. This service has
been provided for the past three years and proved to be very successful. The Jackie Gleason
driveway together with the lot on Convention Center Drive immediately behind the theater
will be used for valet parking throughout the day.
The cost for valet parking is $9.00.
7. Self-Parking.
Self-parking will be permitted in the following lots:
. 17th Street surface lot - 565 spaces.
. 17th Street garage - 1,460 spaces.
. Parking lot west of City Hall - 117 spaces. (nights & weekends)
. Lincoln Road corridor lots on a first-come-first-serve basis.
A total of 2,142 self-parking spaces will be provided at $5.00 per space. Additionally,
Miami Beach Senior High School will be providing self parking at the school facility, the
Dade Boulevard swale and the vacant lot between North Meridian Avenue and Prairie
Avenue. This parking provides over 1,000 spaces at $10.00 per space.
8. City of Miami Beach Park-and-Ride Program and Electrowave service for Boat Show
. 7th Street garage - 656 spaces. (Electrowave)
. 12th Street garage -138 spaces. (Electrowave)
. 13th Street garage - 286 spaces. (Electrowave)
. 16th Street and Collins Avenue - 200 spaces. (An additional 560 spaces may be available if not
reserved by the Loews Hotel)
. 21 Street and Collins Avenue surface lot -117 spaces.
3
. 34th Street and Collins Avenue - 62 spaces.
. 35th Street and Collins Avenue - 72 spaces.
. 46th Street parking lot - 420 spaces.
. 53rd Street parking lot - 159 spaces.
. 64th Street parking lot - 65 spaces.
This provides a total of 2,215 spaces. Department staff will take vehicles home.
Buses will provide continuous service on show days operating one hour prior to opening each
morning until one hour after closing each night. The Electrowave is $.25. The parking rate
is $10.00 per car which includes round-trip shuttle service. The projected cost ofthe shuttle
buses is $17,500. The number of cars parked at the Park and Ride Facilities last year were
11,800.
9. Shuttle Service.
The Miami International Boat Show will provide free continual shuttle service between all
three show sites at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Biscayne Bay Marriott Marina and
Bayside Sailboat Show. (South side) This will provide an additional 3,000 parking spaces.
All shuttle buses will unload on Washington Avenue in front of the Convention Center and
load on Meridian Avenue between 18th Street and 19th Street. The Parking Department will
bag the meters on this street.
The City will provide free shuttle service from 43rd Street to 7th Street. The Brokerage
Yacht Show will provide free shuttle service from 64th Street to 42nd Street.
10. Traffic Plan.
The Miami Beach Police strategic plan for the Boat Show reflects the following street
closures: Convention Center Drive from 17th Street to Dade Boulevard through 19th Street
from Meridian Avenue to Convention Center Drive, from February 11 through 25,2000.
The STEP (Selective Traffic Enforcement Plan) Unit will have a total of one Sergeant and
four Officers on duty one hour prior to the show, during show hours, and one hour after the
show. The STEP Officers will focus their attention to the Julia Tuttle exit onto Alton Road
South, Alton Road and North Michigan Avenue, Collins Avenue and any other necessary
location.
Traffic officers will be posted at the intersections of 17th Street and Alton Road, 17th Street
and Meridian Avenue, 17th Street and Convention Center Drive, and Meridian Avenue at
18th Street through 19th Street.
Traffic signals will remain on rotation unless the Officer feels the need to manually control
the intersection. In this case, the Officer will place the light on flash and physically take
control of the intersection. At the conclusion of his tour of duty, the traffic signal will be
again placed on rotation.
11. Electronic Signage.
Electronic signage information boards will be placed for east bound traffic on MacArthur
Causeway near Terminal Island, Alton Road and Michigan Avenue, Dade Boulevard and
Meridian Avenue, and on the Julia Tuttle Causeway.
12. Barricades.
Barricades will be used in the area surrounding the Convention Center. Bayshore Golf
Course and the swale area of Dade Boulevard will be protected with a rope and a stake
system which is less expensive and is more aesthetically pleasing. The rope and stake system
will be placed on the Beach High swale during the staging in/out of the show.
13. Media Coverage.
Information concerning the park-and-ride shuttle program, self parking, street closing, and
the days and hours of the show will be communicated through the following media:
. City of Miami Beach bulletin board information. (CMB)
. City of Miami Beach water bill & Newsletter. (CMB)
. City of Miami Beach Website. (CMB)
. Dade County cable channel. (CMB)
. Insert in The Miami Herald the weekend of the Boat Show. (Scheduled for weekend
section of February 18,2000)
. Homeowners & Merchant Associations. (CMB)
. Miami Today (MIBS)
Parking information, show days and hours will be distributed in our Press Kit to over 500
members ofthe media including television, magazine, radio and newspapers.
14. Code Compliance.
The Code Compliance Department will be sending notification to residents informing them
of the prohibition of using dirt lots and residential lots for parking. This problem was
experienced in prior years by homeowners on Prairie Avenue, Meridian Avenue and homes
between Dade Boulevard canal and 17th Street.
5
15. Yacht Brokerage Show (Pre-Owned Boat Show).
This show is located on Collins Avenue between 43rd Street and 49th Street and is presented
by Yachting Promotions, Inc. (Show Management), a separate entity not associated with the
Miami International Boat Show. Ingress and egress of boats will occur during non-peak
hours. The Yacht Brokerage Show provides free continuous shuttle service on show dates
and interconnects with the NMMA Boat Show at the Convention Center allowing visitors
to shuttle between the two Miami Beach sites.
16. Meetings Scheduled at City Hall.
No meetings are to be scheduled at City Hall during the Boat Show that require attendance
by the public or outside staff.
