COMMISSION MEMORANDUM NO. t ~(..-q'L
TO:
Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and
Members of the City C mmission
DATE: October 20, 1999
SUBJECT: A RESOLUTI OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING THE CHILDREN'S
CANCER CARING CENTER'S REQUEST FOR A COMPLETE WAIVER OF
COSTS IN THE AMOUNT OF $3,010 FOR THE CHILDREN'S HOLIDAY
PARTY EVENT ON DECEMBER 18, 1999, AT THE MIAMI BEACH
CONVENTION CENTER.
FROM: Sergio Rodriguez
City Manager
Administration Recommendation:
Adopt the Resolution.
Background:
For the past 14 years, the City of Miami Beach has approved the use of the Miami Beach Convention
Center for a holiday party in December for the children undergoing treatment at the Children's Cancer
Caring Center. The last party took place on December 19, 1998, and is done annually under the
auspices of Ms. Lee Klein for this unique organization which provides care for children atllicted with
cancer.
In previous years, the Center has been provided free of charge for this event. At its regular meeting
of September 30, 1999, the Convention Center Advisory Board recommended to the City
Commission the waiver of the rack rate of $3,010, which included rent, in-house equipment, and
minimal additional air conditioning charges.
Analysis:
The Administration would normally not recommend waiver of costs for events at the Convention
Center unless the waiver amount was taken into consideration during the preparation of the budget.
However, the Children's Cancer Caring Center is a unique organization which provides care for
children afflicted with cancer. Since this event has been held at the Convention Center for 14 years
at "no cost", its revenue was not included in the Convention Center budget. As noted above, it
incurs minimal expenses in the Center's operating budget. Therefore, it is because of these reasons
that the Administration recommends waiver of the costs for this event.
