SUBJECT: Detective Luis King - DCACP's December 2005 Officer of the Month
This purpose of this Letter to the City Commission is to announce the selection of Detective
Luis King by the Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police (DCACP) as their December
2005 Officer of the Month.
While off-duty, Detective Luis King was taking care of personal business at Regents Bank in
South Miami-Dade County when he realized that a bank customer front of him in line was in
the process of attempting to rob the bank. The subject had passed a note to the teller
demanding cash, and claiming that he had a gun. Detective King, realizing that confronting
the subject inside the bank would endanger innocent bystanders, went outside to call 911
and request additional units.
After summoning the police, Detective King observed the subject exit the bank with his
stolen money. Detective King then pulled his service weapon and identified himself as a
police officer and demanded that the subject surrender. The subject then began to flee the
scene with Detective King in pursuit. The subject realizing escape was impossible,
surrendered to Detective King. Detective King secured the subject until Miami-Dade Police
officers ardved on the scene and took him into custody. Detective King is to be commended
for his excellent tactical judgment not putting other bank customers at risk and acting quickly
to apprehend this dangerous subject.
Detective King's actions show that a true law enforcement professional is always on duty
and ready to protect and serve the public.
Detective King is the fifth Miami Beach Police Officer to be recognized by the DCACP in
2005. Officer Pfrogner, Detective Muley and Sergeant Schoenfeld were also honored in
January 2005 for their efforts in subduing an extremely violent subject (weighing 380 pounds
and 6 feet 5 inches tall) and possibly psychotic subject who had broken into the Playwright
Pub at 1265 Washington Avenue. Detective Gustavo Sanchez was honored in July 2005
for his heroic efforts on June 12, 2005 when he responded from an off-duty job to the report
of drowning in progress off the beach behind 100 Lincoln Road.
Please join me in congratulating these fine officers for their remarkable accomplishments.
We are extremely proud of them and are honored to be working with individuals of their
extraordinary caliber.
